(Dan Tri) - On the night of December 22nd and early morning of December 23rd, Yen So fish market was bustling with buyers and sellers. This year's red carp were evaluated as even and beautiful, but many traders were worried that they would not be able to sell their products because the selling price had dropped sharply.
Yen So fish market (Hoang Mai district, Hanoi) is known as the largest fish market in the capital. On the night of December 22nd and early morning of December 23rd, this market becomes more bustling with the scene of red carp trading for people to buy for worshiping and sending the Kitchen Gods to heaven. Red carp are imported by traders from fish farming villages in provinces neighboring Hanoi such as Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa, Hai Duong... After being transported to the market, the fish are released into large water tanks, where oxygen is added to ensure their survival. According to our ancestors, the 23rd of December is the day the Kitchen God rides a carp to heaven. Therefore, red carp is considered one of the indispensable items in the worship ceremony on the 23rd of December.
Traders in small markets gathered to choose healthy fish, according to different sizes and needs. It is known that the price of red carp this morning is from 20,000-120,000 VND/kg (depending on size). Ms. Truong Thi Nhai (a trader in Yen So fish market who has been in the business for nearly 30 years) is sorting red carp. Ms. Nhai shared that beautiful fish must have an even red color and be free of fungus. The fish at her facility are being sold at 50,000 VND/kg (for 20 fish), a significant decrease compared to last year (80,000 VND/kg). Another trader in the market was quite worried because the price of fish has dropped quite a bit this year. At the same time last year, a good quality red carp could be sold for 120,000-170,000 VND/kg, but this year it has dropped to 80,000 VND/kg. Fish are divided into many sizes, commonly two types: small from 20-25 fish/kg, medium 10-15 fish/kg and also very small, large, very large... Each truck carries fish from trucks to businesses in the market. From early morning, Ms. Vi Tuy, a seafood trader at Hom market, went to Yen So fish market to choose quality red carp to serve customers. Ms. Tuy shared that this year's fish have quite beautiful appearance, but the price is quite cheap, the type she buys to resell is only 20,000-30,000 VND/kg.
Traders busily carry bags of fish from Yen So market after choosing the red carp they like. As the morning approached, the atmosphere here became more crowded as more and more vendors from small markets in the city came to buy fish.
