Political Commissar Bui Van Tung's house is near the Reunification Hall (formerly Independence Palace), so painter Le Sa Long was fortunate to visit the Political Commissar's family many times. Thanks to that, painter Le Sa Long Not only did he have many memories with Mr. Bui Van Tung and his family, but through cozy meals, he also had the chance to sit and chat with him many times.
From that deep affection, artist Le Sa Long wanted to preserve his precious memories with the Political Commissar through works depicting the portrait of the Political Commissar, the Political Commissar with his comrades, and the Political Commissar with his family.
Of the five new paintings, he likes the large oil painting he made after many months of work and many meetings the most. He remembers that three years ago, in the last months of 2019, Mr. Bui Quynh Hoa and Mr. Bui Hai Nam wanted to have a portrait of him for his 90th birthday celebration.
At this time, he was very weak, lying in bed most of the time, always having someone to take care of him. Every morning, for 2 hours (from 8 to 10 am), his son, Bui Hai Nam, would take care of him, push the wheelchair to take him out to sunbathe and chat a little with his children and grandchildren.
"Although he was weak, he was still lucid and answered happily when I asked about his memories of the battlefield. And I also took advantage of those mornings to sketch and record... as documents to find the composition and details to create the work," said artist Le Sa Long.
"After two or three months of hard work, the painting was finally completed. In addition to the large oil painting mentioned above, I was also inspired to paint four other paintings using pastel. Each painting has its own story," the artist continued.
Colonel, Political Commissar Bui Van Tung said: "During the war, before setting off, each tank of the company was given a liberation flag, 60x90 cm in size, sewn from common fabric. The purpose of handing out the flag was to clearly identify that this was a Liberation Army tank so that our units could easily recognize it and avoid shooting each other. In addition, every time the tank moved, the flag on the turret often fluttered, making the battle more exciting...".
Talking about the paintings he just completed, artist Le Sa Long confided: "I am quite satisfied because I have portrayed the image of a talented, virtuous, exemplary, humble military officer, always loyal and devoted to his comrades and teammates and loved by everyone. I still remember at the longevity ceremony, he smiled and nodded in satisfaction with his portrait in oil on the wall. That was a happy moment of the artist that I will remember forever."
Currently, the paintings painted by artist Le Sa Long have been received and carefully preserved by the family of Colonel and Political Commissar Bui Van Tung.
Looking at the paintings of his father when he was no longer around, the son of Political Commissar Bui Van Tung, Mr. Bui Hai Nam, was moved: "I want to thank artist Le Sa Long very much, because the portraits of him are not only very similar, truly depicting the image of my father, but also because of the feelings that the artist put into them. These works are the result of artist Le Sa Long's passionate work after many months. Using realistic visual language, his works have portrayed my father's appearance and demeanor. When people come to my house to pay their respects to my father, they all praise and stop for a long time in front of this painting. I think this is a keepsake that our generation leaves for the next generation, so that later our descendants can look at the paintings and remind themselves to live up to the deceased - Uncle Ho's soldier - Bui Van Tung".
