On July 30, Mr. Masoud Pezeshkian was sworn in as the 9th President of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Mr. Pezeshkian, 69, won the second round of Iran's presidential election on July 5. He is a reformist and heart surgeon who served as health minister under reformist President Mohammad Khatami from 2001 to 2005.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by senior officials from several countries including Armenia, Tajikistan, Egypt, Sudan, Iraq, Türkiye, Saudi Arabia, Azerbaijan, Cuba and Brazil. European Union (EU) Special Enrique Mora also attended.
Iran's new president is expected to announce a new government within two weeks.
After the oath-taking ceremony, Mr. Pezeshkian gave a speech broadcast live on national television, pledging to "protect the official religion, the system of the Islamic Republic of Iran and the country's constitution."
Mehr News quoted the leader as saying that Iran will seek constructive and effective interaction with the world based on the principles of dignity, wisdom and interests.
The world needs to "seize this unique opportunity to resolve regional and global issues with the participation of a strong, peace-oriented and dignified Iran," he said .
Calling for peace in the region, President Pezeshkia said that countries "must not waste their precious resources on conflict and war of attrition" and that Tehran will "always stand on the right side of history".
The leader expressed his determination to continue negotiations with major powers to lift sanctions against Iran, noting that the country's nuclear program is for peaceful purposes and has been verified by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
"I think Iran has an inalienable right to have normal relations with the world and I will not back down in the fight against tough sanctions," he declared.
On the day of Mr. Pezeshkian's inauguration, the US announced sanctions against five individuals and seven companies in China and Iran for allegedly being involved in purchasing important components in the ballistic missile and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) manufacturing program for "units under" the Ministry of Defense and Logistics of the Iranian Armed Forces (MODAFL).
