Officially launch bilateral trade negotiations with the US

According to the Department of Foreign Market Development, the phone call between Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien and US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer took place on the evening of April 23.

This is an important meeting to discuss the principles, scope and roadmap of the negotiations. The phone call was attended by members of the Government Negotiation Delegation and technical representatives from relevant ministries and sectors.

During the phone call, Minister of Industry and Trade, Head of the Government Negotiation Delegation Nguyen Hong Dien affirmed that Vietnam attaches importance to developing a comprehensive strategic partnership with the US, and wishes to promote economic and trade relations in a balanced, stable, sustainable and effective manner with the US. Vietnamese ministries and sectors are ready to negotiate and resolve issues of concern to the US, and work with the US to find reasonable solutions for mutual benefit, in the spirit of harmonious interests and shared risks.

Attending the phone call were members of the Government Negotiation Delegation and technical representatives from relevant ministries and branches.

US Trade Representative Jamieson L. Greer appreciated the two countries' agreement to negotiate a bilateral trade agreement; expressed confidence that the two sides will soon reach appropriate solutions, promoting stable and mutually beneficial economic and trade relations.

At the end of the meeting, the two heads of the negotiating delegations also agreed to maintain regular exchanges to speed up the negotiation process on each specific issue.

Previously, at the 5th meeting on adapting to the new US tariff policy on the morning of April 22, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh asked ministries and branches, especially the Negotiation Delegation, to prepare well the content for negotiations with the US side.

According to the Prime Minister, this is based on the principle of closely following the instructions of competent authorities to promote balanced and sustainable trade between the two countries. The head of the Government also noted that the negotiation direction "does not complicate the issue or affect the international agreements that Vietnam has participated in".

During his visit and work in the US on April 10 (US time) in Washington, Special Envoy of General Secretary and Deputy Prime Minister Ho Duc Phoc met with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick.

The Deputy Prime Minister discussed with the US Government to agree on organizing negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement between the two countries. In particular, the two sides agreed to consider negotiating the content of tariffs - the most important pillar of this trade agreement.
