Conquering the top of Ngu Chi Son, the most majestic pass in the Northwest
Việt Nam•05/01/2025
Ngu Chi Son is located between Lao Cai and Lai Chau provinces. It is the 15th highest mountain in Vietnam and is known as the “First majestic mountain pass in the Northwest” with majestic and rugged natural scenery and rich and diverse vegetation. With a height of 2,858m, the mountain is majestic and imposing, challenging even experienced climbers. This name reminds us of Ngu Chi Son in the work Journey to the West by Ngo Thua An. Legend has it that the mountain was created by the hand of Buddha and suppressed the Great Sage Equal to Heaven, Ton Ngo Khong, for 500 years. Photo: NVCC To ensure safety as well as guidance and support on the way and places to rest, Mr. Chieu chose to go on a tour to explore Ngu Chi Son for 2 days and 2 nights. He said he chose this trekking route because of its dangerous but interesting and surprising nature. Photo: NVCC According to Mr. Chieu, the scenery of Ngu Chi Son in reality is so beautiful that it is unreal: “The scene of 5 mountain peaks like 5 fingers rising in the middle of the sea of clouds creates a majestic scene just like in fantasy movies. At this time of year, the temperature drops sharply. At the foot of the mountain, it is only about 8 - 10 degrees Celsius, but at the top, there is sunlight so it feels warmer”. Photo: NVCC To climb to the top of Ngu Chi Son, the estimated distance is 12km, mainly trails through primeval forests or along a series of high rocky mountains undulating in the clouds. Photo: NVCC Mr. Chieu affirmed that the most difficult things when conquering the “First Northwest Pass” are the long slopes, requiring physical strength, endurance as well as the bravery of the trekkers. In addition, because he went on a tour, he received a lot of support, almost did not have to worry or prepare a place to rest, cooking utensils... Photo: NVCC “This trip costs around 3-4 million VND depending on each person’s needs. To prepare well for the trip, I practiced walking 7-8km/session, 3 sessions/week. People who are afraid of heights will also have difficulty climbing Ngu Chi Son.” Photo: NVCC According to the male trekker, this is a beautiful mountain that is not easy to conquer: "Everyone should consider and prepare carefully for their health and spirit because compared to other peaks in Lao Cai province, Ngu Chi Son is the most dangerous and difficult to conquer." Photo: NVCC Mr. Chieu shared that in 2025, he will continue to conquer Sa Mu mountain peak - one of the places with fairy-tale-like scenery but not too dangerous or difficult to travel. Photo: NVCC
