According to a VNA correspondent in the US, in the past 48 hours, many emails with content related to contract termination have been sent to dozens of employees at: the Department of Education, the Small Business Administration (SBA), the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) and the General Services Administration (GSA).
Emails sent to at least 45 people on probation at the SBA stated: “The agency has determined that you are not qualified for continued employment because your skills, knowledge, and abilities do not match the current needs of the agency and your abilities are not sufficient to continue working for the agency.” In addition, about 100 probationary employees at the GSA also received termination emails on February 12.
The move comes as President Donald Trump has tasked billionaire Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) with implementing a massive cut to the 2.3 million-strong federal civilian workforce, an effort that has drawn a series of lawsuits from labor unions and criticism from some Republicans.
According to US government figures, there are currently about 280,000 civilian employees who were hired less than two years ago and most are still on probation. Earlier, on February 11, President Trump signed an executive order that significantly expanded DOGE’s powers, requiring government agencies to prepare for layoffs and work closely with DOGE to identify employees who could be fired.
