The Government Office has just announced the conclusion of the Government Standing Committee at a meeting regarding Vietnam's unilateral visa exemption for citizens of other countries and a number of new policies in the field of immigration management, transit, and residence of foreigners in Vietnam.
Open visa policy will help Vietnam improve its competitiveness and attract international tourists in the future.
Accordingly, the Government Standing Committee requested the Ministry of Public Security to preside over and coordinate with the Ministry of Justice and relevant agencies to urgently implement procedures and complete dossiers to propose a number of policies in the field of management of entry, exit, transit and residence of foreigners in Vietnam in accordance with the law.
The ministries reported to the Government to submit to the National Assembly for consideration and inclusion in the National Assembly's joint resolution at the 5th session (May) on 3 contents: increasing the visa duration from no more than 30 days to no more than 90 days, valid for single or multiple entries; granting electronic visas to citizens of all countries and territories; and at the same time increasing the duration for granting temporary residence certificates at border gates for people entering under unilateral visa exemption from 15 days to 45 days.
Government proposes to extend visa validity to 90 days
Currently, Vietnam issues e-visas to citizens of 80 countries for a period of no more than 30 days and for a single entry only. Previously, the Ministry of Public Security also submitted to the Government and sent to ministries and branches for comments on a draft law amending and supplementing a number of articles of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam, in which it proposed to extend the duration of e-visas issued to foreigners entering Vietnam from 30 days to a maximum of 3 months to attract international tourists.
This is also the requirement set by Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh at the National Online Conference on Tourism in 2023 with the theme "Accelerating Recovery - Accelerating Development" organized by the Government Office in mid-March.
In 2023, Vietnam aims to welcome 8 million international visitors and 102 million domestic visitors, with total expected revenue reaching 650,000 billion VND.
