Peacock, wild animal, wild bird in Red Book, Can Tho successfully raised, sold for 6 million/pair.

With his passion and business acumen, Mr. Tran Van Toan in Binh Yen B area (Long Hoa ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) became the owner of a peacock farm with an income of hundreds of millions each year.

He got involved in peacock farming in 2016 when he accidentally read information online while he was researching new animals to raise at home.

“Through research, I know that peacocks are considered feng shui pets that bring luck and harmony to the homeowner's family, so they are very popular.

In particular, people with high and stable incomes like to buy peacocks as pets. Moreover, this animal brings high economic value." - Mr. Toan shared.

So he decided to invest in raising this animal to develop the economy.

At first, he imported 2 pairs of parent peacocks, of the Indian peacock breed (blue peacock) for 20 million VND/pair from Thailand to raise.

Mr. Toan, a farmer raising peacocks (which are wild animals, wild birds) in Binh Yen B area (Long Hoa ward, Binh Thuy district, Can Tho city) personally takes care of his family's peacocks. Peacocks are an animal species listed in the Red Book.

Because he did not have much knowledge about peacocks, Mr. Toan immediately looked up how to raise them on the internet and in books and newspapers.

With many years of experience in poultry farming, Mr. Toan's peacock farming has many advantages.

After 5 months, the peacock laid 25 eggs. Mr. Toan used an electric incubator to hatch the eggs. The hatching rate was over 80%.

At that time, baby peacocks cost 2 million VND/pair, peacocks from 4 to 6 months old cost 6 million VND/pair.

Seeing the effectiveness of the model, Mr. Toan bought 5 more pairs of parent birds to raise.

After that, he continued to import white peacocks (albino peacocks) to domesticate and crossbreed with blue peacocks, creating colorful peacocks with a special beauty.

Sharing about peacock farming techniques, Mr. Toan said that raising peacocks is very easy because this is a wild animal so it has much higher resistance than other pets, and peacock food is also very simple.

Nutritionally, an adult peacock eats very little, only as much as a chicken. In addition to normal foods such as rice, corn, bran, rice, etc., to keep the peacock's feathers shiny and smooth, Mr. Toan also feeds them peanuts and bean sprouts. Toan grows the green vegetables for the peacocks in his backyard.

To ensure biosecurity and isolation from disease risks, everything from cleaning to taking care of the peacocks is done by Mr. Toan and the farm is isolated from the outside.

Mr. Toan's peacock farm is also built and arranged to be warm in winter, cool in summer, with appropriate lighting depending on the season; there are areas for adult birds, young birds, etc.

Mr. Toan also said that one of the factors that helped his peacock farming model succeed was that the peacock farming environment must be clean, and the barn must be disinfected regularly to avoid humidity and the development of pathogens. There must be a small yard for the peacocks to freely dance, exercise, and sunbathe.

Arrange more perches in the cage for the birds to fly and perch comfortably so that they can grow quickly and have beautiful feathers.

The cage floor and the outside yard must be high and covered with sand to absorb moisture, ensuring that the peacock's tail feathers do not get dirty when moving, and at the same time be a place for the peacock to take a sand bath to clean its feathers.

Currently, Mr. Toan is one of the largest peacock suppliers in the Mekong Delta.

In addition, he also experimented with raising pheasants, earning 10 - 12 million VND/pair. His farm currently has more than 60 birds including peacocks and seven-colored pheasants.

With this farm, he supplies hundreds of chicks to the market every year. He sells newly hatched peacocks for 1 million VND each.

As for 1-month-old Indian peacocks, the selling price is 2 million VND/pair, 1-month-old white peacocks are 5 million VND/pair and parent peacocks are 15 - 20 million VND/pair.

With good fertility and a high hatching success rate (about 855), he earns more than 200 million VND each year.

According to Mr. Toan, the trading market, as well as the peacock farming profession, is increasingly vibrant, so in the coming time, he will expand the scale of farming further, support with breeds, techniques, and output consumption if anyone has a need to raise them.

He hopes that peacock farming will develop further, becoming a breed of animal close to human life.
