Specifically, at least 252,000 voters have cast their ballots at early voting locations in the state, as of 4 p.m. local time on October 15. This number is nearly double the 136,000 who participated on the first day of early voting in the 2020 US election year.
On social media, state election official Gabriel Sterling called the results impressive, stating: “The turnout was spectacular. We are running out of adjectives to describe it.”
Georgia is one of seven battleground states that will determine the outcome of the US election on November 5. With 16 electoral votes, Georgia could be a big step towards gathering the 270 votes needed to become US President.
According to the Election Lab, a US election data analysis center at the University of Florida, 5.5 million voters have cast early ballots nationwide so far. At this time in 2020, the number of early voters was 27 million, as people avoided crowded polling stations during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Like several other states, Georgia has tightened its mail-in voting rules since 2020, requiring voters who want to vote absentee to provide proof of identity and limiting the number of locations where they can drop off their ballots.
Meanwhile, according to the latest AARP poll released on October 15, former President Donald Trump is narrowly leading Vice President Kamala Harris in a head-to-head matchup in the battleground state of Michigan just three weeks before Election Day.
Specifically, Mr. Trump surpassed his Democratic opponent with a support rate of 49% compared to 48%, while 1% of voters participating in the survey said they would have another choice and 2% were still undecided.
By age, Trump leads Harris 47%-46% among voters aged 50-65. However, the vice president leads his Republican opponent among voters aged 18-34, 54%-40%. Harris also leads among voters over 65, with 53% support compared to Trump’s 42%.
By gender, the poll shows a clear gap between the two candidates. Among men, Mr. Trump leads by 21 points, 57% to 36%, while Ms. Harris wins the most support among women, 55% to 36%.
The poll also notes that Mr Trump leads his opponent by 7 points among independent voters, with 45% support compared to 38%.
Among voters registered to vote early in several battleground states, the former president has a slight advantage, with 48% support compared to 47% for Harris, according to a recent Harvard CAPS survey.
Meanwhile, a Hill/Decision Desk HQ poll in Michigan shows Trump leading the vice president by nearly 1 point — 48.7% to 48%. But Harris leads nationally with 49.8% support compared to the former president's 46.9%.
The AARP poll was conducted from October 2-8, with the participation of 1,382 potential voters and has a margin of error of 4%.
