The conference was chaired by Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien, Director of the Institute of Military History, and Mr. Vo Hong Nam, son of General Vo Nguyen Giap.
Also attending were representatives of Algerian ministries and departments, soldiers, veterans, revolutionary elders, scholars, friends who love Vietnam and many reporters from about 40 Algerian press and television agencies.
Attending and delivering the opening speech at the conference, Algerian Minister of Veterans and Meritorious People, Mr. Laid Rebiga, emphasized that this conference is one of the activities to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the heroic Dien Bien Phu victory as well as the 70th anniversary of the glorious Algerian Revolution (November 1). Although the two events took place in different contexts and geographical locations, they are linked together because of the common history of struggle and the same vision of building a bright future.
He affirmed that Vietnam is one of the countries that most strongly supports the revolutionary cause of Algeria. Although 70 years have passed, the Dien Bien Phu victory is still a great event not only for the Vietnamese people but also for all freedom lovers in the world because this is an epic written by an indomitable nation in the process of defending the homeland.
The Battle of Dien Bien Phu changed many beliefs and theories of military and strategic experts around the world and forced Eastern and Western experts to recalculate the foundations that this battle had laid, such as the art of fighting, the use of weapons and equipment.
The Vietnamese troops, using primitive methods, overcame the most complex fortifications, destroyed the strongest defense lines and carried out a battle with the participation of all forces.
“The name of revolutionary hero Vo Nguyen Giap, a friend of Algeria, will remain engraved in our memories,” said Laid Rebiga.
The great victory of Dien Bien Phu is an immortal national lesson proving that oppressed nations always have the ability to regain mastery and make the enemy respect them. This victory also helps other disadvantaged nations feel proud and have more motivation.
The Algerian revolutionary leaders recognized the importance of that victory, which had shaken the colonialists and exposed their true nature. It was a source of spiritual strength and a burning will that contributed to the Algerian liberation revolution.
In his speech at the conference, Major General Nguyen Hoang Nhien said that it can be said that the Dien Bien Phu Victory brought Vietnam and Algeria closer together as two "neighboring" countries with epochal exchanges. From Vietnam's Dien Bien Phu, Algeria saw the right path to liberation, gained new motivation and new confidence in victory to bring the revolutionary boat to the shore of success. That is a typical example of the human liberation value of the Dien Bien Phu Victory. Through the successful Algerian revolution, the world, especially in places seeking a way to fight for independence and freedom, knew more about Vietnam. Through Algeria, Vietnam integrated more deeply into the world. The support of the world's peaceful and progressive forces for Vietnam during the years of resistance against American imperialism was also stronger.
Professor Ahmed Mizab, an expert on security and strategy, said that clarifying the details of this historical period and carrying out analysis is very important for applying them within the framework of protecting the principles of peace, solidarity and international security in today's period. Events like this also contribute significantly to educating the younger generations, teaching them how to build and protect the country that previous generations had to pay blood and sweat to win.
Mr. Vo Hong Nam assessed that the Dien Bien Phu victory connected the two nations of Vietnam and Algeria, connecting those who fought together for national freedom. The conference was held at a historic moment, when the two nations and two countries were celebrating their 70th anniversary, which was very meaningful. The Algerian side had spent a lot of effort researching, writing and evaluating the significance of the Dien Bien Phu victory, the leadership of the Party, of Uncle Ho and of the Vietnam People's Army, as well as the role of General, Commander-in-Chief Vo Nguyen Giap in the historic Dien Bien Phu campaign. This is the historical connection between the two countries.
Speaking about the connection between the two nations, Vietnamese Ambassador to Algeria Tran Quoc Khanh affirmed that Vietnam and Algeria share the noble values of national liberation and human liberation. The Dien Bien Phu victory and the Algerian Revolution are the two most brilliant milestones, meaningful not only for the past, present but also for the future, leading us to the path of prosperous development, for the benefit of the people.
At the conference, many delegates highly appreciated Vietnam's current national construction, considering Vietnam a model for Algeria in economic development and expressing hope that the two sides will continue to strengthen cooperation in the future.
