Psychological relief match
At the 32nd SEA Games, the Vietnamese women's football team was under great psychological pressure after winning the SEA Games gold medal three times in a row. The opponents all carefully studied the playing style and were determined to defeat the defending champions. Myanmar was the first challenge, because this team had been quietly training under the guidance of Japanese coach Uki Tetsuro and had just defeated the Philippines in the opening match.
In addition, the hot weather in Cambodia is also a real opponent for the Vietnamese "diamond girls", because most of them are around 30 years old. However, in the sweltering heat of nearly 40 degrees Celsius, Huynh Nhu, Tuyet Dung, Thuy Trang, Bich Thuy, Thai Thi Thao, Kim Thanh, Tran Thi Thu, Hoang Thi Loan... played a classy match to defeat their opponents.
First was a delicate goal from Huynh Nhu, who returned from Europe, followed by two finishes from Thanh Nha and Thuy Trang to seal a 3-1 victory. A victory that opened the door to the semi-finals.
The sophistication of the 72-year-old general
"The victory of the Vietnamese team is not due to me but thanks to the great efforts of my students. They are brave women who overcame the difficult weather conditions to win. They truly deserve to be praised and I would like to sincerely thank them," said coach Mai Duc Chung as soon as he entered the press conference room after the match.
Coach Mai Duc Chung was right, because the Vietnamese girls played a match with all their spirit and strength. But it was still not enough, because in this victory there was the mark of the diligent teacher who this year turned 72.
Especially the tactical mark in the second half when he sent Thanh Nha and Thuy Trang in to put pressure on Myanmar's midfield. Nha and Trang were directed to exploit the right wing where Myanmar defender Phyu Phyu Win showed signs of fatigue. It was this change of players that greatly decided the outcome of the match. Thanh Nha's speed made goalkeeper Myo Mya Mya Nyein confused and missed the ball and Nha was as quick as a squirrel to score, raising the score to 2-1. Thuy Trang also scored the goal to make it 3-1 when she moved to the right wing and chipped the ball into the far corner of the goal. Trang is 35 years old this year, an age when even male players find it difficult to play well, but Trang still persistently contributes to the Vietnamese women's team. It was coach Mai Duc Chung who convinced Trang to continue to stick with the team and use her appropriately to maximize her effectiveness.
Myanmar head coach Uki Tetsuro expressed his admiration for the Vietnamese women's team: "We tried to play the best game possible, tried to deploy a defensive counter-attacking strategy, tried to keep the ball so as not to lose the game, but the Vietnamese team played better. All Vietnamese players played well, not just any individual. The Vietnamese team also has a veteran coach who understands the players and opponents in the Southeast Asian region very well, so Vietnam is always the number one candidate for the championship."
In the late match also in Group A last night, the Philippines team beat Malaysia 1-0.
