As one of the officers assigned to Abyei by the President's decision, Captain Le Khuong Duy (Military Region 7) not only completed his mission excellently but also left a deep image of a soldier of Uncle Ho's Army with international friends.
Abyei is a land with one of the harshest climates in Africa, where the dry season lasts from 6 to 7 months. The outdoor temperature sometimes peaks at 49 degrees Celsius along with sudden sandstorms. During the rainy season, due to drought and desertification, there are times when localized flooding lasts for many days.
Therefore, ensuring barracks here is one of the important and essential requirements for officers and staff performing peacekeeping duties at the mission.
In December 2023, implementing the decision of the President and the Minister of National Defense on sending military officers to perform duties at the United Nations peacekeeping mission, Captain Le Khuong Duy, an officer of the Logistics Department, Military Region 7, left for duty at the UNISFA mission, Abyei region as a staff officer for light construction.
As an officer deployed to the mission for the first time, however, immediately after receiving the assignment from the UNISFA mission commander, Captain Duy quickly approached and became familiar with the new job. His main task was to coordinate with colleagues in the agency to ensure barracks, electricity, and water for officers and employees of the units.
In addition, Mr. Duy also regularly participates in checking and supervising the progress and quality of construction projects and light construction works; monitors the repair and maintenance of equipment and construction materials; receives requests for repair and maintenance of barracks from units and deploys them to contractors for implementation.
Logistics at the UNISFA mission in extremely difficult weather conditions due to the rudimentary road system. Especially during the rainy season, the roads are almost impassable due to mud. In addition, the security and political situation in the Abyei area is complicated, with many potential risks, unpredictability and many dangerous diseases.

In 2024, Captain Duy participated in and coordinated the implementation of many important projects and works of the mission, notably coordinating with the Engineering Team of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force to complete the "Smart Barracks" project at Highway base.
This is the first pilot project of the United Nations in improving the quality of facilities and barracks for peacekeeping forces performing tasks in the field.
In addition, Mr. Duy was also assigned the role of coordinating officer, organizing regular meetings to promptly resolve difficulties in barracks work of units, organizing training to supplement professional knowledge to handle situations when incidents occur.
In addition to doing a good job of ensuring the barracks for officers and staff of the UNISFA mission, Mr. Duy also actively coordinated with members of the Ministry of National Defense working group at the mission to support the local community such as: medical examination and treatment, health consultation and free medicine distribution to the people; building fences and repairing and maintaining local roads; repairing water stations and supporting the supply of clean water; collecting waste, clearing sewers, and cleaning the environment.
With his efforts and hard work, at the end of his term, Mr. Duy was assessed by the UNISFA mission commander as having excellently completed his mission and was awarded the medal for the cause of United Nations peacekeeping.
