Hanoi Although exhausted, Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Tung tried to carry a 60-year-old woman suffering from smoke inhalation from the fourth floor to the ground, while his teammates carried an 8-year-old boy out.
At around 5:20 a.m. on November 30, a fire broke out on the third floor of a 5-story, 30-square-meter house on Yen Lang Street, Dong Da District. Inside the house was a 60-year-old woman and her 8-year-old grandson, who were on the fourth floor.
Upon receiving the news, the Fire Prevention and Rescue Police Team (Dong Da District Police), located more than 2 km away from the fire, dispatched two fire trucks and dozens of officers and soldiers to the scene.
The house on fire is located on a main street, the two lower floors are rented as offices, the third floor where the fire broke out had some flammable objects, fire was shooting out the window.
Lieutenant Nguyen Thanh Tung and three soldiers were assigned to go inside to search for the victims. Discovering the grandmother and grandchild lying motionless on the bed, Tung quickly put oxygen masks on both of them.

In the thick black smoke, Lieutenant Tung carried the woman down to the ground. The narrow stairs were only about 60 cm wide and slippery, making it difficult to move. His legs wobbled from exhaustion and smoke inhalation, but he tried to carry her to the waiting ambulance.
At the same time, Corporal Dang Dinh Binh Phuoc rescued the 8-year-old victim. With one hand, he opened his mouth to help the boy get oxygen, while the other hand continuously stroked his body. "At that time, I was really worried, afraid that the victim could not survive," Phuoc said, adding that he had only been a soldier for 20 months.
The two victims are being treated at Bach Mai Hospital and their health is gradually stabilizing. "Luckily, at the time of the fire, the road was clear and the information reported by the base was very accurate. If it had been just a few minutes later, the victims might not have survived," said Lieutenant Colonel Thinh Vu Khanh, Deputy Chief of Dong Da District Police.
