Research data from Parrot Analytics shows that between 2020 and 2024, Netflix increased its share of original films in its library from 15.5% to 19.8%. However, audience demand for these films dropped sharply from 28.3% to 12.3%. Meanwhile, demand for franchise content spiked from 71.7% to 87.7%.
Netflix's original content catalog is expected to explode in 2023. As of July 2023, original works accounted for 55% of Netflix's 6,600 films in the US alone. Netflix's global database has up to 18,000 films, of which original content is expected to account for half. In 2024, Netflix will still spend $17 billion on original content production because it believes that original content plays an important role in creating its own appeal. With this strategy, Netflix wants to reduce its dependence on licensed content from traditional studios, while many of them have launched competing streaming services and tested removing content from Netflix.
With original content, Netflix also identifies content in the Asia-Pacific region as very important. According to analysts, Southeast Asia is currently a potential market in many aspects, in which local culture creates attraction for original content. In fact, not only Netflix but also Prime Video owned by Amazon has a content strategy in Southeast Asia.
In 2025, Netflix has scheduled 6 Thai films, including: “Frozen Hot Boys” (photo), “Tee Yai Rerk Dao Jone”, “Khao Chum Thong”, “Everybody Loves Me When I'm Dead”…; or 7 Indonesian films, including “The Most Beautiful Girl in the World”, “Promised Hearts”… Analyst Tim Westcott said that although Netflix has shown interest in original content and has continuously invested large amounts of money in this strategy. However, the viewership rate is not as expected. Audiences are shifting to franchised content, especially with works that already have a brand, such as “Harry Potter”. In fact, the audience's shift also has a reason, because Netflix has increased the price of original content packages, while users do not want to spend too much.
“We will always add licensed content to give our users variety and quality, but original content is our future,” said Spencer Neumann, Netflix’s chief financial officer. In fact, Netflix has many original films with great appeal, such as “The Lego Movie,” “It,” “The Glory,” etc.
