On the afternoon of September 14th, the Long Xuyen City Police (An Giang province) initiated legal proceedings and temporarily detained: Duong Hong Thai (27 years old); Nguyen Thanh Vu (28 years old); Nguyen Thanh Thai (21 years old, all residing in An Giang); Nguyen Tan Thanh (26 years old, residing in Dong Nai); Hua Huynh Huong (26 years old, residing in Ho Chi Minh City); and Thai Hong Thinh (24 years old, residing in Hau Giang province ) for the crime of illegal detention.
In this group, Hong Thai, Tan Thanh, and Huynh Huong were additionally charged with extortion.
In connection with the two aforementioned charges, the Long Xuyen City Police also prohibited Ho Thi Kim Thi (25 years old, residing in An Giang ) and Pham Quoc Khanh (17 years old, residing in Hau Giang) from leaving their place of residence.

Around May, Ho Thi Kim Thi lent Do Thi Trinh (31 years old, residing in Quang Ngai) 15 million VND on the condition that the woman work for Thi at a karaoke bar in Can Tho .
After borrowing the money, Trinh did not keep his promise and did not repay it.
Around June, Thi and her husband, Duong Hong Thai, opened another karaoke bar in Long Xuyen City. Hearing this, Trinh called Thai to ask for a job as an employee.
On the evening of September 3rd, Thai went to Ho Chi Minh City to pick up Trinh and his accomplices. In the car, Trinh borrowed an additional 24 million VND from Thai to transfer money to his friend's account.
After lending the money, Thai took Trinh to meet Thi at a karaoke bar in Long Xuyen City.
Thi asked Trinh to call a friend to return the 24 million VND that he had borrowed from Thai. As for the 15 million VND owed earlier, because Trinh couldn't pay it back, Thai's group, including Thi, Thanh Thai, Vu, Thanh, and Huong, beat him up and then held him captive in a house in My Phuoc ward, Long Xuyen city.

Upon discovering that the victim intended to escape, the group continued to beat him, shock him with a stun gun, and threaten him.
On the morning of September 6th, Trinh climbed onto the rooftop of his house on the 3rd floor, clinging to a water pipe in an attempt to escape, but unfortunately fell to the ground and sustained injuries. The victim was taken to An Giang Central General Hospital for emergency treatment and the incident was reported to the local police.
