General Birame Diop, United Nations Military Advisor and the United Nations delegation recently visited and worked with the Vietnamese Engineering Team at the UNISFA mission (Abyei).
Colonel Nguyen Viet Hung, Commander of the Vietnamese peacekeeping force at the UNISFA Mission and Captain of the Vietnamese Engineering Team, introduced the organization, functions and tasks of the Vietnamese Engineering Team's mass mobilization work since arriving in Abyei.
Many of the team's activities have been highly appreciated by the mission, such as building classrooms, repairing tables and chairs, teaching, showing movies to children, preventing floods, making boats, providing agricultural guidance, and providing free medical examinations and treatment to people.
General Birame Diop expressed his joy at the visit and acknowledged the efforts of the Vietnamese Engineering Team in performing its tasks, exceeding the United Nations' expectations.
"Despite facing many difficulties in weather conditions as well as lack of facilities, you have transformed Highway from a shabby base that only stored the mission's materials into one of the most spacious bases here," Mr. Birame Diop shared.
He was impressed with the tasks the team carried out such as improving the road system, ensuring smooth traffic, supporting the Abyei government and people against floods, doing agriculture, renovating schools... The contributions of the Vietnam Engineer Corps have won the sympathy of the people.
“The connection with the local people is the key to success, especially the humanitarian work that has strengthened the trust of the people of Abyei region with the entire UN peacekeeping force at the UNISFA Mission,” General Birame Diop affirmed.
The UN military advisor also said that in the coming time, the Vietnam Engineering Corps needs to continue upgrading vital routes and opening new patrol and control routes as possible. At the same time, deploy the construction of a smart camp project for military units of countries stationed in the mission area.
Currently, the political security situation in the region is still unstable and complicated, especially the increasing conflicts between factions and tribes in Sudan, so the Vietnam Engineering Corps needs to strive to overcome difficulties and challenges, and perform well the assigned tasks.
General Birame Diop emphasized that Vietnam has successfully deployed a very high proportion of female soldiers in the UNISFA Mission. He said that many countries send soldiers with very few or no female soldiers to participate in UN peacekeeping missions, but Vietnam has ensured a very good proportion of women. He especially wanted to thank the Vietnamese female soldiers for their efforts to overcome difficulties to carry out the mission.
Even small actions such as showing films regularly to children at Abyei Church School have contributed to motivating students to go to school. Activities such as repairing tables and chairs, building classrooms, coordinating with the Ministry of Education to come up with plans to help schools, and coordinating with local authorities to carry out humanitarian activities are very welcome, in line with the Mission's policy.
At the end of the working session, the UN Military Advisor wrote in the traditional golden book, took souvenir photos and visited the Highway base of the Vietnam Engineering Team.
The 2nd Engineer Team set out for Abyei in early August with 184 men.
Abyei is a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan. In 2011, the two countries signed an agreement pledging to withdraw troops from the demilitarized zone in Abyei and establish a joint mechanism to resolve the issue. However, so far, the two countries have not made much substantive progress.
UNISFA was established in 2011 under United Nations Security Council Resolution 1990 with a mandate to protect civilians and promote demilitarization in Abyei.
