Khuoi Ky stone village is located in Dam Thuy commune, Trung Khanh district, Cao Bang province, more than 80km from Cao Bang city center, about 2km from Ban Gioc waterfall. In recent years, the ancient village of the Tay people has attracted many tourists thanks to its unique architecture and traditional culture. Local people have taken advantage of hundreds of years old stilt houses, built entirely of stone, roofed with traditional yin-yang tiles to make homestays to welcome guests.
Ms. Ly Thi Diep is a Tay ethnic woman, a pioneer in tourism in Khuoi Ky. In 2016, she began to use her family's house to welcome the first groups of guests. To date, the couple has built a second homestay with 5 bungalows, 8 private rooms, and a stilt house that can accommodate 25-30 guests. The homestay has a unique location, with its back leaning against a towering limestone mountain and its front facing the gentle Ky stream.
Taking advantage of the unique terrain, Ms. Diep came up with the idea of making a room next to a rocky cliff, named "cave room". One side of the room is a undulating limestone cliff, the other sides are built of stone, with windows overlooking the common yard and garden. The room is fully equipped with amenities such as a private bathroom, air conditioning... with a cost of 1 million VND/night. "This room is very popular with international guests because of its uniqueness, novelty, and unlike anyone else's. They come here to experience what it's like to sleep in a cave," said Ms. Diep. This homestay received a 4.5/5 star rating on Google, and is well connected to popular booking platforms around the world. Ms. Diep's family's homestay is often fully booked on weekends. Ms. Nguyen Kim Phuong, owner of another homestay in Khuoi Ky stone village, shared that to attract more and more tourists, people have gradually focused on organizing, enriching and diversifying services such as taking guests to experience planting, harvesting, picking vegetables, catching fish, shrimp, cooking, soaking feet in herbal medicine, dancing, making campfires, performing, and exchanging ethnic culture. Sports activities are also included to serve guests such as hiking to conquer high mountains, motorbike trips to explore Cao Bang, and rowing boats to admire the scenery of Quay Son River.
Khuoi Ky village is named after the cool stream right at the entrance to the village. The walls of the houses and the paths are paved with stones. It is said that the village was built around the 16th century. 100% of the population in the village are Tay people, gathered in 14 traditional stone houses, spread over an area of about 10,000m2.
In 2008, Khuoi Ky village was recognized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism as a "Typical traditional cultural village of ethnic minorities". In 2018, Khuoi Ky was chosen as a community tourism experience point in the "Indigenous cultural experience in the fairyland" tour of Non Nuoc Cao Bang Geopark. Trung Khanh district in particular and Cao Bang province in general have had many communication activities to spread the image of Khuoi Ky stone village to domestic and foreign tourists. In 2023, Trung Khanh welcomed nearly 1 million visitors, of which Khuoi Ky stone village welcomed about 5,000 visitors, over 20% of whom were international visitors.
