According to Ms. Ngan, before getting married, Dao girls must know how to embroider and sew to weave their own wedding dresses. Therefore, as soon as she turned 7 years old, her grandmother and mother taught her how to embroider. She was taught from simple to complex stages, from small details to how to dye faded indigo shirts; embroidering and sewing her own clothes to wear at home, to the market, to weddings, to the fields, to spring festivals...
Looking at the clothes, people know whether the girl or woman is skillful or not. To complete a traditional costume of the Dao people, it must go through many stages and requires carefulness and skill. Usually, Dao women take advantage of their free time to weave and sew clothes, so the time to complete a set of clothes is not fixed, sometimes only a few weeks, sometimes a few months.
Compared to other people in the village, Ms. Ngan is not the one with the most experience in weaving brocade. However, according to the comments of the women, Ms. Ngan's products have their own unique features, the products are all sophisticated and beautiful.
Not only is she passionate about preserving and developing the brocade culture of her people, Ms. Ngan also collects and learns beautiful patterns and unique color combinations of other ethnic groups. Ms. Ngan boldly participates in training classes to improve her brocade weaving skills organized by authorities and organizations at all levels, then returns to teach them to the women in the village.
Ms. Ngan shared: “Every time I have the opportunity to teach the younger generation, whether I teach at home or am invited to teach in class, I try my best to pass on all my experience to other sisters. I always combine teaching with analysis, passing on the good things and unique features of brocade culture to the younger generation to understand and remind them to be responsible for preserving the cultural beauty of their nation.”
With Ms. Ngan's dedication and the enthusiastic support of the women in the village, young women in Nam Thanh village now know how to sew and embroider dresses for themselves and their families to wear on holidays and Tet. During the off-season or Tet, women in the village gather in groups to exchange experiences and show each other how to sew brocade costumes.
The old teach the young, the knowledgeable teach the ignorant… all the women of the Dao Thanh Y ethnic group in Nam Thanh village are working together to preserve the unique cultural beauty of their people.
