In the final of the 2023 Asian Cup, Qatar defeated Jordan 3-1. Notably, all 3 goals of the home team came from penalties. Mr. Ma Ning's decisions created a lot of controversy.
Mr. Fathi Al Arbati believes that Mr. Ma Ning only made one correct decision. According to Mr. Al Arbati, in the first 11-meter penalty, Akram Afif's right foot kicked defender Abdallah Nasib's foot.
Regarding the second penalty, former Jordanian referee said that Mr. Ma Ning made the correct decision. Mahmoud Al Mardi interfered with Qatar player Ismaeel Mohammad.
Referee Ma Ning to officiate the 2023 Asian Cup final.
In the third penalty, Mr. Al Arbati did not think it was the right decision. He affirmed that Akram Afif threw himself at the goalkeeper. At the time of contact, goalkeeper Yazeed Abulaila was in a stable position, while the attacker crashed into his opponent.
Mr. Fathi Al Arbati is a famous referee in Asia, having officiated many matches in tournaments in the Arab, Asian and world. He was the main referee at the 2005 Youth World Cup and the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
Former Saudi referee Omer Al Mehannah shared the same opinion with Fathi Al Arbati on the third incident. Al Mehannah said: " The decision was incorrect. Striker Akram Afif collided with the goalkeeper after playing the ball ."
However, Mr. Al Mehhnnah assessed the first two situations as reasonable decisions by referee Ma Ning. The former referee explained: " The first penalty was correct. The referee was in a good position to observe. The second penalty was also correct after the VAR referee intervened because of the obstruction of the opponent ."
All three of Qatar's penalties were converted by Akram Afif. His hat-trick in the final helped him surpass Aymen Hussein to become the top scorer of the 2023 Asian Cup, with 8 goals. The Qatar team won the No. 1 Asian tournament for the second consecutive time.
