Fortunately, the fire was "quickly extinguished" after it broke out, a spokesperson for the ship's operator Royal Caribbean confirmed to CNN . The cruise line said there were no injuries and the overall impact on the ship was "minimal."
The record-breaking mega-cruise Icon of the Seas - measuring 363m in length and weighing 250,800 tonnes - was docked in Costa Maya, Mexico when the incident occurred. The ship briefly lost power but its backup power was activated immediately.
Icon of the Seas is currently the largest cruise ship in the world, capable of carrying 10,000 people. |
A Royal Caribbean spokesperson confirmed crew members had brought the fire under control and explained that all staff are trained to handle such situations.
The $2 billion Icon of the Seas, which made headlines when it launched and sailed its maiden voyage earlier this year, has seven swimming pools - including a record-breaking water park at sea of more than 5,000 square meters. The ship's current itinerary is unaffected by the fire and is en route to the Mexican island of Cozumel.
Speaking to CNN , a Royal Caribbean spokesperson said fires are "not common but not rare" on cruise ships, but are typically dealt with quickly and cause little disruption to passengers.
During the incident, onboard announcements alerted passengers to what was happening, according to the cruise line. Social media users on the Icon of the Seas Facebook group spoke of minor disruptions to their day, but operations quickly returned to normal.

In 2013, the Grandeur of the Seas, also a Royal Caribbean cruise ship, caught fire for more than two hours in the middle of the night in the bow section while sailing in the Bahamas. None of the 2,224 guests and 796 crew members were injured, but the fire haunted cruise enthusiasts at the time.
