A 4-story restaurant with an area of 170 square meters in District 1 suddenly caught fire, forcing many people living nearby to flee for their lives, on the morning of January 18.
At around 1:30 a.m., smoke and fire broke out on the ground floor of a restaurant on Tran Hung Dao Street, Nguyen Cu Trinh Ward. At the time, the four-story house was undergoing interior repairs and was unoccupied.
Because there were many cardboard boxes, wall panels, tables and chairs inside the restaurant, the fire quickly spread to the upper floors after only a few minutes. Many people living nearby shouted and used mini fire extinguishers to put out the fire, but to no avail. Because the electricity was cut off, some people living in the two houses next door could not open the roller shutters.
9 fire trucks and more than 50 firefighters were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters pried open the shutters to help 3 people living next to the burning house escape. Police used ladders on the 3rd and 4th floors to prevent the fire from spreading.
An hour later, the fire was under control, with no casualties, but much of the property inside was burned. The cause of the fire was determined to be an electrical short circuit.
