According to Mr. Huy, the fire broke out at 8:15 a.m. on March 5 at the baggage and import goods inspection and supervision area of Mong Cai International Border Gate Customs (Bac Luan I Bridge area), Tran Phu Ward, Mong Cai City, Quang Ninh Province.
The initial cause of the fire was determined to be a Vietnamese citizen carrying a bag (backpack) containing coiled goods while completing immigration procedures into Vietnam through Mong Cai international border gate.
When arriving at the area for checking and supervising imported goods and luggage, the backpack containing the citizen's goods spontaneously caught fire and burned 4 people, including 1 officer of Mong Cai Customs Branch and 3 Vietnamese citizens.
Immediately after the incident, authorities at the border gate promptly organized rescue of victims, moved property to a safe place and extinguished the fire.
Leaders of Mong Cai City and the Border Guard Command of Quang Ninh Province arrived at the scene to direct the work of overcoming the consequences, stabilizing the situation, arranging traffic flow, and organizing normal immigration and exit activities.
The incident is currently being investigated, verified and clarified by the Mong Cai International Border Gate Border Guard Station in coordination with relevant agencies.
