Great destructive power, difficult to control
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, the yellow-backed bamboo locust and several other bamboo-damaging locust species (collectively called bamboo locusts) belong to the group of swarming locusts. When mature, this species often gathers in large numbers and migrates to find food sources and places to lay eggs.
The yellow-backed bamboo locust has been recorded causing damage in our country since 2008. They arise and cause local damage in mountainous districts of the provinces: Quang Ngai, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Son La, Dien Bien, Phu Tho, Bac Kan and Cao Bang. The main objects of damage are forestry trees such as bamboo, reed, rattan, etc.
In recent years, the yellow-backed bamboo locust has emerged and caused quite serious damage to both agricultural and forestry crops in China, Laos and Vietnam. This is a pest that can move quickly, has great destructive power and is difficult to control.
From 2016 to 2018, bamboo locusts broke out and damaged an area of nearly 4,000 hectares each year on forestry crops and some agricultural crops (upland rice, corn, tobacco, bananas, cassia, etc.). From 2019 to 2023, bamboo locusts broke out on a smaller scale than in previous years.
Proactive forecasting and prevention
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, bamboo locusts have now emerged and caused damage in 11/16 provinces in the North, including Cao Bang, Bac Kan, Dien Bien, Lang Son, Son La, Tuyen Quang, Hoa Binh, Phu Ho, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Ninh. The current infected area is about 1,031 hectares. Compared to the end of May 2024, bamboo locusts have appeared in 7 more provinces and the infected area has increased by about 400 hectares.
Currently, most young locusts do not have wings, so prevention will be easy and effective. However, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, if not detected early and controlled promptly, in the next 10-20 days, young locusts will turn into adults with wings and fly in swarms, move quickly, are very difficult to prevent and pose a risk of causing serious damage to many crops.
To proactively prevent and minimize damage caused by bamboo locusts, on June 14, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development issued a document requesting the above 11 provinces to assign specialized units and localities to investigate and detect early locust nests in the area and organize spraying to eliminate them while the locusts are still young.
Closely monitor the time of emergence of bamboo locusts, the scope of damage, direction of movement, and locust clustering points; at the same time, proactively develop plans, budget estimates, fully prepare conditions for materials and human resources, and be ready for bamboo locust prevention work, to prevent widespread outbreaks.
Speaking to Kinh te va Do thi on the afternoon of June 14, Head of the Hanoi Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection Luu Thi Hang said that currently, the city has not recorded any bamboo beetles causing harm to forestry trees and crops in general. The document of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has not mentioned Hanoi as a key area at risk of being affected by this species.
However, in the spirit of the highest initiative, the Hanoi Department of Crop Production and Plant Protection is assigning technical staff to review and make projections and forecasts. At the same time, it continues to direct specialized units to closely monitor the damage caused by bamboo locusts in the northern provinces to advise the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to promptly direct prevention and control.
