According to people in Boc Thuong hamlet, Bach Dang commune (Hoa An district, Cao Bang province), the bamboo locust species appeared in May 2024.
At first, the locusts mainly ate bamboo leaves, then flew in flocks and moved to eat corn leaves and banana leaves.
The hamlet reported to the commune for support measures and at the same time, encouraged people to proactively buy pesticides to spray. However, the number of locusts grew at a high density, affecting many crop areas.
Bach Dang is one of the communes most damaged by locusts. By June 13, 2024, 2 hectares of corn, over 100 hectares of bamboo and rattan were damaged by locusts, with an average density of 20 - 30 locusts/ m2 , in high places 80 - 100 locusts/ m2 for corn, a density of 200 - 300 locusts/ m2 for weeds, and about 300 locusts/ m2 on rattan and moving in swarms with great destructive power, difficult to control. Locust swarms tend to move down and damage corn, rice, crops, and weeds.
Chairman of Bach Dang Commune People's Committee Tran Cong Hoan said: After receiving information about locusts appearing in the area, the commune reported to the authorities to take measures to prevent the spread of the pest.
At the same time, the authorities propagated that people proactively spray pesticides on some areas of corn and rice in the hamlet that were infected, continue to monitor the locust swarms and take precautions from a distance, especially the 2024 crop seedlings, areas that have not been infected, and report to the commune to continue to have a solution to minimize the damage caused by the yellow-backed bamboo locust.

Bamboo locusts are damaging crops (eating corn leaves) in Bach Dang commune (Hoa An district, Cao Bang province).
According to the Agricultural Service Center of Hoa An district (Cao Bang province), from the beginning of April to June 13, 2024, bamboo locusts damaged 4.4 hectares of rice, 9.71 hectares of corn, 3.5 hectares of tobacco, 75.006 hectares of weeds and 200 hectares of bamboo forest in the communes of Le Chung, Bach Dang, Hong Viet, Hoang Tung, Nam Tuan and Nuoc Hai town.
To proactively prevent and control locusts in a timely manner, the People's Committee of Hoa An district directed the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the district's Agricultural Service Center to coordinate with the People's Committees of communes and towns to regularly inspect and closely monitor the area to detect locust outbreaks early, thereby taking synchronous and effective measures to spray insecticide.
The center provided communes and towns with 744 bottles of CRYMERIN 50 EC (Wavotox 585 EC) locust insecticide for timely spraying and prevention.
Up to now, communes and towns have sprayed all infected areas on crops and weeds, however, the bamboo forests have not been sprayed due to prolonged rainy weather.
The Department of Crop Production and Livestock under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Cao Bang province has supported Le Chung and Bach Dang communes with 2 Korean BF 150 smoke machines to spray locusts in the bamboo forest, but due to prolonged rainy weather, the spraying has not been carried out.
The bamboo locust swarms tend to move from bamboo forests to areas of rice, corn, crops, and weeds. To effectively prevent the yellow-backed bamboo locusts from affecting crops, the District People's Committee continues to direct specialized agencies, communes, and towns to increase information and propaganda, and guide people to check in order to detect early and effectively prevent bamboo locust outbreaks.
Mobilize local resources to eradicate bamboo locusts simultaneously to prevent widespread damage; use bamboo locust pesticides listed in the list of permitted pesticides at the recommended dosage on the packaging... to protect crops and limit damage caused by locusts.
