In the Central Highlands, in recent years the trend of leaving the city to return to the countryside has been happening quietly but very noticeably.

Leaving Ho Chi Minh City to return to the countryside to buy land to build a farm

After more than 10 years of struggling to find work in Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City, 2 years ago, Mr. Truong Duc Thang decided to return to his hometown in Gia Lai province to start a business.

As a manager for an investment fund, his accumulated income is enough to buy a house and settle down in Ho Chi Minh City.

But contrary to the majority, he returned to buy 10 hectares of lush basalt land on the hill of Hai Yang commune, Dak Doa district (Gia Lai) to make a farm called Green Beli Farm.

Thang did not quit his main job but switched to working online, going on business trips to Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City about a week a month. The rest of the time he takes care of the garden, plants, and enjoys the fresh life and cool climate of the highlands.

Thang aims to develop clean agriculture and eco-tourism. On 10 hectares of red land, he uses a part to grow pine trees, the rest to grow avocado and durian to supply Hanoi consumers. The products are sold directly to the dining table, so the price is good and the demand is also very high.

Set up a group to help returnees

The story of young people leaving big cities to return to the highlands like Thang is not unique. In Pleiku City, a community was established to support young people returning called Pleiku Returnees.

Mr. Nguyen Hieu, the page admin, said that the group was only established about a year ago but already had more than 3,000 members participating and interacting. Among them, many people have actually left the big city to return to Pleiku to start a business.

Every month, the community organizes many activities and conversations to connect and share experiences in stabilizing life upon returning home.

Others, even though they have not actually returned, also learn about and join the group to prepare mentally for the day of repatriation. As a returnee himself, Hieu said he left Ho Chi Minh City about 6 years ago to return to his hometown to start a business.

Previously, he was a lodging manager and worked for many years in Ho Chi Minh City, but over time he realized that the environment was not suitable, so he decided to return to his hometown.

According to him, those who choose to return are mainly taking over the family business, or are introduced to stable jobs in their hometowns. Especially those with flexible jobs, who can work online, and are not dependent on offices or factories.

He believes that the main condition for workers to return and stay with their homeland is to have a stable job and income.

According to Hieu, most people choose to return to their hometowns because of the moderate living standard, clean environment, closeness to family and less stress and pressure than living in big cities. Especially the pressure of housing, living expenses and raising children.

“Most people understand that working in big cities has a higher income than in the countryside, but the costs are also significantly higher, not to mention urban problems such as pollution, dust, traffic jams, etc.

And importantly, for ordinary workers, whose income is not really outstanding, the opportunity to access real estate in urban areas like Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi... is very far away!" - Hieu shared.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Lich - Vice Chairwoman of Gia Lai Provincial People's Committee, said that recently the wave of young people returning home is happening strongly. According to local leaders, the province's development strategy is sustainable agriculture associated with tourism. Therefore, it is very necessary for dynamic, knowledgeable young people to return and contribute to the development.

Gia Lai provincial leaders said they pay special attention to and listen to young people's suggestions through youth dialogue programs, support for innovation and startups. In addition, the government also created a support channel for those who encounter difficulties in starting a business, providing guidance on policy procedures and listening to suggestions for local development.

Strong wave of return since COVID-19 appeared

According to the Department of Labor, War Invalids and Social Affairs of Gia Lai province, the province has about 950,000 people of working age. The labor force is abundant but the number of jobs in the locality cannot meet all the demand, leading many workers to go to southern provinces such as Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong to find work.

Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the wave of repatriated workers has been quite strong, with over 50,000 workers returning at one point. However, when the pandemic passed, a large number of workers still returned to the South to find work. Others went to the cities to work as seasonal workers after the end of the coffee, pepper, and durian harvest seasons. Some decided to return to settle down and work locally.
