On October 17, according to Tuoi Tre Online , in the greenhouse, sweet cabbage, chives, watercress, and purslane (wild vegetables) grown hydroponically by Mr. Vu are growing well and are ready to be harvested and brought to An Thoi market (An Thoi ward) for sale.
Mr. Vu said that due to the fact that local people and tourists prefer clean vegetables, he boldly took advantage of his family's vacant land to build a greenhouse to grow hydroponic vegetables. Up to now, he owns 4 greenhouses with an area of about 4,000m2 (two greenhouses use soil to grow tomatoes, cucumbers, etc.).
"I sell mustard greens, watercress, purslane, and chives all year round. On average, I supply the market with 800kg - 1 ton of various vegetables per month," Mr. Vu happily said.
Initially investing in greenhouses and growing clean vegetables on the island, Mr. Vu encountered many difficulties in output. In addition, Phu Quoc's weather is sometimes very sunny and hot, so he used additional shading nets and designed a misting irrigation system to cool and stabilize the temperature for vegetables to grow well.
He currently sells Chinese cabbage, water spinach, purslane for 25,000-35,000 VND/kg (depending on the type), 5,000-10,000 VND/kg higher than vegetables grown in the usual way. Therefore, after deducting production costs, Mr. Vu earns a profit of about 40 million VND/month (estimated at nearly 500 million VND/year).

Investing in a greenhouse is expensive (about 700 million VND - more than 1 billion VND/greenhouse), but the advantage in return is that Mr. Vu has less work to take care of it; it is less susceptible to pests, the vegetables grow well, and can be sold for a good price.
Therefore, he plans to continue investing in more greenhouses to grow more vegetables to supply to An Thoi and Duong Dong markets (Phu Quoc City), serving the dining needs of locals and tourists.
Mr. Le Dinh Quang - Chairman of Phu Quoc City Farmers' Association - said that Mr. Vu's hydroponic vegetable growing model in greenhouses has brought high efficiency in recent times and especially growing watercress and purslane (wild vegetables) is favored by people, contributing to bringing high economic profits, stabilizing family life. Thereby contributing to the supply of clean vegetables to serve the needs of people on the island.
