Common injuries when running

Tendonitis, sprains, and calf strains in runners can be prevented by proper warming up and stretching.

MSc. Dr. Ho Van Duy An, Orthopedic Trauma Center, Tam Anh General Hospital System, said that when jogging, the legs continuously repeat the same movement, increasing the risk of damage to muscles, joints and connective tissues. Below are some common injuries.

Patellar tendinitis occurs when the knee joint is used continuously for a long time or is not warmed up properly before the main exercise, causing patellar tendinitis, leading to swelling and pain.

Achilles tendinitis , also known as heel tendinitis, is caused by repetitive stress on the foot. Typical symptoms include burning pain or stiffness in the lower calf in the morning; heel pain, especially when stretching the heel or standing on tiptoe. If the tendon ruptures, the patient will have persistent pain and heel swelling.

Ankle sprains often occur after a collision or fall while running. When injured, the foot turns inward, causing damage to the lateral ligament, or turns outward, causing damage to the medial ligament.

Iliotibial band syndrome is common in runners, especially long-distance runners. The injury occurs due to overuse of the legs, straining and inflaming the iliotibial band.

Tibial stress syndrome occurs when the muscles, tendons, and bone tissue become overloaded. The characteristic symptom is pain along the front or inside of the tibia (shin bone). The injury is not serious, but in some cases, if not treated properly, it can progress to a fracture.

Plantar fasciitis is an injury that causes the tendons in the foot to stretch, lose elasticity, and reduce their ability to withstand force. This injury can become chronic, recur many times, and negatively affect the patient's gait.

Bursitis: Bursitis is a thin cushion located in the joint capsule, containing synovial mucus. The function of the synovial fluid is to lubricate the skeletal system and nourish the articular cartilage. When running for a long time, the knee joint has to work a lot, causing overload, which can easily lead to bursitis.

Meniscus tear: The meniscus helps stabilize the joint and protect the bone from wear and tear. However, a sudden twist of the knee while running can cause a meniscus tear. In some cases, a part of the torn meniscus breaks off and gets stuck in the joint, which can cause osteoarthritis.

A calf strain is an injury to the muscles at the back of the leg. The strain causes discomfort and prevents the foot, ankle, and knee from functioning properly. The sufferer must temporarily stop exercising and sometimes have difficulty walking.

To prevent these injuries, runners should not increase their running distance by more than 10% per week. Overexerting the body too quickly is a major cause of running injuries.

Warming up and stretching properly before running helps the muscles, heart rate and breathing gradually adapt to the increased intensity of activity. These are important steps that players of any sport should not skip. Runners should replace their shoes after every 600 km or when they are worn out. A proper rest and nutrition regimen helps support the body's recovery and regeneration process.

Dr. An warns that amateur and professional runners are at risk of injury. Without proper care, running injuries can hinder daily activities and develop into serious complications. People with injuries should monitor their body's symptoms and seek medical attention early if they notice any abnormalities.
