Realizing the available conditions, many organizations and households have invested in developing cage fish farming models and brought about clear results.

Proactive from the breeder

The province has about 1,300 hectares of water surface. There are many rivers and streams flowing through districts and cities, and 173 reservoirs, nearly 1,500 dams and weirs of all kinds. With such potential and advantages, a number of cooperatives and households in many localities have taken advantage of the water surface area to raise fish in cages, bringing high and stable economic efficiency.

Realizing the favorable water conditions when there is a river flowing through the area, many years ago, some households in Van Quan town, Van Quan district took advantage to develop a cage fish farming model. Mr. Trieu Van Vuong, Director of Tan Minh Cage Fish Farming Cooperative, Van Quan town, Van Quan district said: The cage fish farming model in Van Quan town has existed for a long time, however, the scale is still small and the efficiency is not high. In 2014, Tan Minh Cage Fish Farming Cooperative was established with 19 members who are cage fish farmers. Joining the cooperative, members have more conditions to learn from each other's experiences, support each other in terms of capital, techniques, consumption markets... thereby continuously improving economic efficiency. Up to now, the cooperative maintains 41 cages of grass carp and tilapia, an increase of 17 cages compared to 2014; Average income per fish cage reached 15 million VND/year, an increase of 20% compared to 2014.

Similar to Tan Minh Cage Fish Farming Cooperative, taking advantage of the water surface, Le Hong Phong Livestock and Aquaculture Service Cooperative, Bac Son town, Bac Son district also focuses on developing the cage fish farming model. Mr. Duong Huu Chuc, Director of the Cooperative, said: The Cooperative was established in 2010. At the beginning of its operation, the Cooperative mainly raised fish in ponds with an area of less than 1 hectare, but the economic efficiency was very low. By 2013, after researching and learning, the Cooperative had deployed 10 fish cages in Vu Lang lake. While working and learning from experience, combined with favorable conditions in the lake, the Cooperative's cage fish farming model developed rapidly, at one point the Cooperative maintained 37 fish cages with a variety of fish such as grass carp, tilapia, catfish, etc. Currently, the Cooperative's profit from 1 fish cage reaches 20-40 million VND/year.

Along with the two above-mentioned units, in recent years, many organizations and households in the province have effectively exploited the advantages of the water surface and proactively developed the cage fish farming model. By 2022, the province had 567 fish cages, more than double the number in 2016. However, in recent years, due to the impact of rain and storms, some cages were damaged, so now the whole province has 513 fish cages, concentrated in the districts of Van Quan, Van Lang, Trang Dinh, Binh Gia, Bac Son, Loc Binh.

In addition to the initiative of the people, relevant levels and sectors have implemented many solutions to support organizations and individuals to expand and further improve the efficiency of cage fish farming models in the province.

Support from the State

In order to support cage fish farmers, in recent years, relevant levels and sectors have focused on implementing synchronous solutions suitable to the local practical situation. Ms. Dinh Thi Thu, Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, said: Taking advantage of the advantages of rivers, streams, lakes, and dams, in recent years, relevant levels and sectors have deployed propaganda to organizations and individuals participating in aquaculture in general and the cage fish farming model in particular. Along with that, the Department of Agriculture and Environment has directed specialized agencies to guide and support cooperatives and people in terms of resources, care techniques, trade promotion, expanding product consumption markets, etc., thereby gradually improving the economic efficiency of the cage fish farming model.

Under the direction of the Department of Agriculture and Environment, specialized agencies quickly began implementing specific measures. Mr. Tran Van Ngan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: To support people in developing the cage fish farming model, every year, the unit organizes technical training courses and provides resources for cage fish farmers to increase the number of cages as well as improve the quality of fish. Specifically, in the period of 2021-2024, from various sources of capital, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center has supported people in developing cage fish with a scale of 131 fish cages (of which the fisheries career capital implemented 105 fish cages; the central agricultural extension capital implemented 26 fish cages) with specialty fish such as catfish, silver carp, and catfish... In which, the State budget supports 70% of the breed, food, and medicine for disease prevention and treatment; households contribute 30% and build cages. All households implementing the model are technically trained before implementation.

Through the support of the State, households have more resources, motivation, and techniques to expand the scale of cage fish farming. Mr. Linh Van Tham, Van Quan town, Van Quan district shared: Taking advantage of the river surface area, in previous years, my family invested in raising 2 fish cages with grass carp, common carp... In 2023, with the support of the State (the State supports 70% of the fry, food, and medicine for disease prevention and treatment), my family invested in 2 more cages to raise American catfish. Up to now, the output of American catfish raised in the family's cages is about 2 tons, the weight of the fish is from 2-4 kg/fish and it is time to harvest. With the market price fluctuating around 100,000 VND/kg, the family is expected to earn 200 million VND.

Along with the above households, thanks to the initiative of the people, cooperatives and the support of the State, the implementation of the cage fish farming model in the province has achieved positive results. Through a survey of households and cooperatives raising cage fish in the province, in 2024, each fish cage on average generated an income of 15-40 million VND/year (depending on the cage area and type of fish raised), an increase of 10% compared to 2020. The development of the cage fish farming model has contributed to the overall development of aquaculture in the province. In 2024, the output of aquaculture in the province was 1,905.36 tons, an increase of 2.73%, of which the output of farmed fish reached 1,896.46 tons, an increase of 2.59% compared to 2023.

Cage fish farming has contributed to increasing income and improving the lives of local people. However, in reality, cage fish farming still has limitations, while the room for developing the cage fish farming model is still very large.

There is still much potential for development.

As mentioned above, the province has about 1,300 hectares of water surface, including many locations of rivers, lakes, and dams that are favorable for cage fish farming. However, the development of cage fish farming is still limited (currently, the whole province has 513 fish cages with an area of about 1.85 hectares). The water surface area for cage fish farming is still very large, especially in large irrigation and hydroelectric reservoirs that are favorable for cage fish farming such as Ban Lai reservoir, Thac Xang hydroelectric reservoir, etc.

In addition to the advantages of water surface area, aquaculture in general, including cage fish farming in the province, does not encounter too many difficulties in the consumption stage. Mr. Duong Huu Chuc, Director of Le Hong Phong Livestock and Aquaculture Service Cooperative, Bac Son town, Bac Son district, said: After 15 years of fish farming, including 12 years of cage fish farming, the cooperative has always had favorable conditions in the consumption stage. Through the practical research of the cooperative in the provincial market, the demand for fish consumption of people as well as agencies, units and schools is quite large. Meanwhile, the amount of fish raised in the province only meets a part, the rest is imported from other localities.

With such potential and advantages for developing cage fish farming models, in the coming time, the functional sector will continue to implement measures to accompany people in developing cage fish farming models. Mr. Tran Van Ngan, Deputy Director of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center, said: In the coming time, the unit will continue to review and research to advise superiors to issue documents on zoning concentrated aquaculture areas; continue to pay attention to supporting the implementation of models in areas with favorable conditions for developing cage fish farming, focusing on developing specialty fish species with high economic value; organize training courses, provide technical guidance on care for cage fish farmers...

Along with that, the specialized agency encourages cooperatives and households to boldly invest in cage fish farming, in which it is necessary to carry out procedures for registering cage fish farming and raising key species in accordance with regulations; continue to invest in equipment, promote the application of science and technology in cage fish farming... Thereby continuing to increase the number of cages as well as the quality of cage fish in the area.

With the results achieved, along with the available potentials and advantages, and the attention and support of relevant levels and sectors, we believe that in the coming time, the cage fish farming model in the province will achieve more positive results. Thereby, it will contribute significantly to improving economic efficiency, increasing income for people, and contributing to the overall socio-economic development in the area.
