On October 28, billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong's Vingroup Corporation announced the launch of the VinVentures technology investment fund with total assets of 150 million USD. One surprising thing is that the person chosen to sit in the "hot seat" of VinVentures CEO is a very young businesswoman. That is Le Han Tue Lam - a fairly famous name in the investment community in Vietnam.
In September 2023, the name Tue Lam attracted public attention when she appeared on the investment council of Shark Tank Vietnam season 6. She became the only female "shark" and also the youngest investor in the program at that time.
Le Han Tue Lam becomes CEO of investment fund (VinVentures) of billionaire Pham Nhat Vuong.
Became a Director at the age of 24
Le Han Tue Lam was born in 1994, from Hai Duong, graduated from Foreign Trade University. Tue Lam's career started at CitiBanks as a personal credit consultant. After that, she went to work and was associated with Base.vn from the early days of this startup. After 2 years, Base grew impressively, attracting the attention of many investment funds. Tue Lam decided to move in a new direction by entering the venture capital market.
At the age of 24, she joined Nextrans - one of the venture capital funds that invested in Base - and took on the position of Representative Director of Nextrans in Vietnam. Since 2015, Nextrans has actively invested in 38 startups in Vietnam, including many notable names such as Tiki, TopCV, Base.vn, bTaskee, eDoctor, Selex Motors...
Nextrans Investment Fund operates mainly in three markets: Korea, the US and Vietnam, with a portfolio of more than 70 companies in many fields. The fund's main job is to find and invest in potential startups.
In 2021, Le Han Tue Lam was one of three Vietnamese people honored by Forbes in the list of 30 Under 30 Asia.
Tue Lam once shared that before becoming famous and achieving great success in the business world, she had a difficult childhood when her father died early, her family was always poor, and her mother had to try her best to raise 4 children to study.
In VTV's Morning Coffee program, Tue Lam said: " There are many young people with the same starting point as me, but there is one thing I have always kept in mind since I was in school, that is, we should compete fairly with each other, regardless of starting point.
Whether it is manual labor or intellectual labor, our ability is what determines success. When you start a little further than everyone else, you need to focus on speed, you need to go faster. In my career, I can use one word to describe it: focus .
In Shark Tank Vietnam season 6, Shark Tue Lam always brings a taste for sustainable investment as well as industries associated with Vietnam's core values such as education technology, green technology or agricultural technology with investment values ranging from 200,000 - 500,000 USD. In particular, startups with potential business models and truly promising founding teams can have investment capital of up to 1 million or 2 million USD.
Not long before joining Shark Tank, Tue Lam married a foreign businessman. Her husband is Mr. Loic Faussier - CEO of a bank, master of economics, doctor of law from the Paris Political Academy.
Le Han Tue Lam had a difficult starting point, but for her, ability is the deciding factor for success.
Vietnam's dream of having many "unicorns"
" I want to go the long way with startups so that Vietnam does not only have 4 unicorns ," Le Han Tue Lam said when giving the reason for participating in Shark Tank Vietnam season 6.
This thought continues to be emphasized by Tue Lam when taking on the position of Executive Director of VinVentures Fund - Vingroup Corporation. “ In addition to contributing capital, the special value that VinVentures brings to startups is the ability to connect with companies in Vingroup's ecosystem in both roles: an environment for evaluating and testing product quality, technology services for startups before launching to the market and potential customers.
In addition, with the network and resources of a leading corporation in Vietnam and the region, we are also ready to advise and support startups to connect with major partners in the market and be a "launch pad" for potential startups in the future ," she said.
Investing in technology startups has always been Vingroup's consistent strategy in the process of transforming into a leading technology corporation in Vietnam. Before VinVentures, Vingroup also invested in many technology startups through funds such as Vingroup Ventures and VinTech City. With strong resources from the corporation, startups have all developed successfully and brought products to the market, even rising to leading positions in their fields of operation such as VinBigData, VinAI, VinBrain, VinCSS....
Continuing Vingroup's mission of creating and developing digital technology enterprises, VinVentures creates maximum conditions for ideas and technological innovations to be realized and reach out to the Vietnamese and regional markets.
VinVentures' investment focus will be on Artificial Intelligence (AI); Semiconductors; Cloud computing and high-tech products. In addition, the fund also opens up opportunities for startups in other fields if they have growth potential and are capable of providing quality products and services, not necessarily limited to startups related to Vingroup.
The fund’s initial investment scope is the Vietnamese market, targeting startups with domestic founding teams at the early stage. In the future, the fund will expand its reach to startups in the region, especially in markets with similar development characteristics to Vietnam such as Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.
The conditions for VinVentures to invest are startups with potential for sustainable development, good growth rates, products and services with high commercialization and practical application potential, and a reputable and experienced founding team. The deals will be implemented on the principle of professional investment, in which VinVentures buys shares and becomes a shareholder of the company with specific profit expectations.
