Data analysts and hair experts at HairCoSys have designed an app that uses a proprietary artificial intelligence algorithm to analyze a user’s head image to determine the condition of their hair and scalp, before recommending a suitable treatment solution.
“The idea for HairCoSys came during the Covid-19 outbreak when I discovered my friend’s hair loss problem with her after-dinner selfies,” said founder and CEO Michael Wong.
HairCoSys' app can perform hair and scalp assessments using an iPad and a handheld lens. The technology uses patented algorithms that can calculate the number and measure the thickness of hair strands on specific areas of the scalp using microscopic images.
This quantitative data will be analyzed by AI to assess the current health status of hair and scalp, before recommending appropriate solutions or care products.
HairCoSys' AI model was trained with a database of over a million hair photos, and the company also received academic research support through the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology's Entrepreneurship Center and Tech 300 from the City University of Hong Kong.
HairCoSys aims to integrate its AI technology with various related segments, including hairdressing, shampooing, hair care products, and beauty establishments, creating a comprehensive hair care ecosystem.
To date, more than 3,000 hair salons and hair and scalp care centers have used the HairCoSys app. The company representative said they are aiming to release a mobile version after the upcoming Lunar New Year.
“The team plans to launch a mobile app for individual users after Chinese New Year, so that people can receive personalized analysis and be equipped to make informed decisions about their hair care,” CEO Wong revealed.
Consumer apps can help users regularly check and monitor their hair condition at home as well as receive recommendations on hair products and treatments.
Wong said HairCoSys plans to expand into the Greater Bay Area, as well as Malaysia and Thailand for retail distribution of hair products next year.
The company will showcase its technology at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January, hoping to attract attention to the North American and European markets.
