According to the Daily Mail, the shooting occurred on the streets of Brussels a few hours before the match between Belgium and Sweden took place at the King Baudouin Stadium. Two of the victims were believed to be Swedish fans (wearing the team's jersey) on their way to the stadium to watch the match.

Due to security reasons, the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) decided to postpone the match midway. The Belgian and Swedish teams abandoned the match after only one half. Daily Mail reported that the players of both teams requested the match to be stopped. The Belgian and Swedish teams agreed and UEFA approved.
Thousands of spectators at the King Baudouin Stadium were stuck in the stadium for about 2 hours at the request of the organizers to ensure safety until the situation was under control. Many Swedish fans expressed concern, some burst into tears when they heard the news of the shooting.
