At the biggest football festival in Europe in 2024, Scottish fans arrived in Germany early. Because their team was in Group A, they had to play first. The “Tartan Army” - nicknamed by Scottish fans - started to march on Woerners bar, located in the center of Munich. Immediately, everything here was completely “broken”.
Beer and snacks were not prepared. Some Scots, who were quicker, sneaked in and drank all the beer in Woerners Bar. When the “Tartan Army” arrived, everything was empty. They made a mess, screaming for beer. Some even pried open the tap, hoping that there were… a few glasses left at the bottom.
“We got here at 12pm and there was nothing left to drink. It was infuriating. We couldn’t get in without a beer,” Scotland fan Brian Robertson told The Scottish Sun.
Scotland fans bring impressive scene in Germany
But the lack of beer did not dampen the noise of the Scottish fans. They switched to soft drinks and continued the party. According to BILD, Scotland has a population of nearly 5.5 million and more than 5% of them made the trip to Germany.
The service shortcomings have left German bars “scared”. Beer venues in Munich immediately urged suppliers to deliver hundreds of thousands of wooden beer barrels in just one night. However, that quantity was still not enough, forcing them to import double, even more. But in the end, the beer barrels still ran out.
After Munich, Scotland fans continued to Cologne. Despite being warned and well prepared, the serious beer shortage continued.
Their enthusiasm "terrifies" German bars
Meanwhile, English fans consumed more beer than Scottish fans. About 40,000 Englishmen (not counting wives or girlfriends) visited Gelsenkirchen. This is a small town with a population of less than 270,000 people in Germany. The bar space in Gelsenkirchen is not large and the GE Piazza store was suddenly “occupied”, becoming the unofficial headquarters of the “Three Lions” fans.
The restaurant and pub sold more than 75,000 liters of beer in less than 26 hours. GE Piazza manager Umit Yavuz said the bar’s previous record was selling about two kegs on a weekend day. But now it’s selling hundreds of thousands of kegs a day, nearly as much as they’ve sold in decades.
The manager of GE Piazza said: "I have never seen a case of "beer thirst" like the English fans. They created a terrifying scene, screaming, rioting to get beer, to fuel the home team players. Our service team was completely broken, exhausted. However, this is still one of the things we enjoy the most."
English fans' "beer festival"
After 2 matches, the Scottish team has 1 point, ranked 3rd in Group A, while the English team has 4 points, leading Group C. The journey at EURO 2024 of both teams continues and most likely, cities in Germany will suffer the pleasant "beer thirst" of English and Scottish fans.
