Increased production demand
After many years of ineffective cultivation of mulberry, Mr. Nguyen Van Nam (Phong Dien district, Can Tho city) started to grow red-fleshed jackfruit with the hope of earning a good profit. However, due to concerns that the hot weather would kill the seedlings, this farmer has only now bought seedlings to plant nearly 3 months after harvest.
“In recent years, red-fleshed jackfruit has been purchased by traders at a stable price, especially this year, whoever grows it makes a good profit. Therefore, I decided to cut down some mulberry trees to experimentally grow this type of tree. Referring to some types, I chose to buy the red-fleshed jackfruit with Indo gourd leaves at a price of 40,000 VND/tree,” Mr. Nam shared.
After harvesting the summer-autumn rice, Mrs. Pham Thi Quyen and her husband (O Mon district, Can Tho city) did not plant a new crop but switched to growing vegetables. Mrs. Quyen said that her family usually does not grow rice all 3 times a year but often intercrops 2 rice crops and 1 vegetable. This helps bring the family higher income as well as limit the disadvantages of the weather.
“Usually, after the summer-autumn rice crop, my family will choose short-term vegetables, about 2 to 2.5 months to plant, to facilitate the drainage of water in the fields. Instead of buying seeds, we prioritize seedling production facilities to save time on planting and harvest early,” said Ms. Quyen.
Seedling prices increase
With the high demand for production at the beginning of the rainy season, seedlings are in high demand and selling at good prices, making many farmers who grow seedlings excited.
Ms. Truong Thi Kieu (Thot Not District, Can Tho City) said that her nursery is open for sale all year round. The most popular times are Tet and the beginning of the rainy season. Due to the high demand for seedlings from farmers in various places, the price of this item has also increased by 20-30% compared to other times of the year. Durian, jackfruit and papaya are popular plants.
“Currently, durian prices range from 80,000 to 100,000 VND/tree, Thai jackfruit from 20,000 to 30,000 VND/tree, Indonesian red-fleshed jackfruit from 30,000 to 60,000 VND/tree, papaya from 75,000 to 100,000 VND/10 trees, depending on the type and size. These types have all increased by 2,000 to 20,000 VND each,” said Ms. Kieu.
Not only fruit trees but also vegetable varieties are chosen by many farmers. At Mr. Tam's nursery (O Mon district, Can Tho city), varieties of plants such as chili, tomato, mustard, etc. are quite popular. The price of each type of plant has also increased from 1,000 - 3,000 VND.
“Instead of sowing seeds themselves, many farmers choose to buy seedlings to avoid risks and harvest early. This year, despite the harsh sunlight, thanks to experience in caring for the seedlings, the yield and quality of the seedlings supplied to the market are both good. The prices of seedlings have increased by 1,000 - 3,000 VND/tree. However, due to production demand, purchasing power has only increased, not decreased. After deducting all expenses, my profit is about 30 - 40 million VND, about 30% higher than a normal month,” said Mr. Tam.
