On the days leading up to the Kitchen Gods' Day, people in Tan Truc, Tan Co, and Bai Truc streets (Tan Phong town, Quang Xuong district, Thanh Hoa province) are busy pulling nets and harvesting red carp to serve the needs of the people.
Mr. Nguyen Van Son (Bai Truc village, Tan Phong town) said that on the occasion of Ong Cong Ong Tao Festival this year, his family harvested more than 2 tons of red carp.
“Red carp is more expensive this year than in previous years, because the craft villages in the North suffered crop failures after the storm. Currently, my family sells it for 100,000 VND/kg (wholesale price), and retails for 130,000-150,000 VND/kg. Compared to previous years, this year the price is 20,000-30,000 VND/kg higher,” said Mr. Son.
Not far from Mr. Son’s house, Mr. Nguyen Van Loan’s family (63 years old, Bai Truc street) had a bumper crop this year thanks to raising red carp. Mr. Loan said that since mid-December, his family has been draining the pond, casting nets to catch fish and selling them to traders in and outside the province.
Mr. Loan estimated that this year's harvest was more than 2 tons of fish. At the price of 150,000 VND/kg, after deducting expenses, he pocketed more than 100 million VND.
“There are only 2 days left until the Kitchen Gods’ Festival, but I predict that the price of fish will increase to 170,000 VND/kg, because the craft villages in the North have a bad harvest this year,” said Mr. Loan.
According to many households raising red carp in Tan Phong town, from the beginning of the third lunar month every year, they release the fish into the pond and start harvesting in the middle of December.
After being caught, fish are put into nets and wait for traders to come buy.
According to Dan Tri reporter's records, 2 days before Ong Cong's Tet, red carp farms in Tan Phong town, Quang Xuong district were bustling with traders coming to buy fish.
Many traders in the central provinces such as Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Quang Tri... brought trucks to buy red carp to sell.
To keep the carp healthy before going to market, the fish farm owner carefully pumps oxygen into the bag for traders to transport.
According to the leader of the People's Committee of Tan Phong town, Quang Xuong district, streets such as Bai Truc, Tan Co, Tan Truc have a long tradition of raising red carp. Thanks to raising red carp, many households have high incomes at the end of the year, some households earn 100-150 million VND each time on the occasion of Ong Cong Ong Tao Festival.
