Carrie Underwood has won American Idol in 2004 and became one of the biggest country music stars. She announced that she would perform at Donald Trump's second inauguration, causing a stir on American social media.
Carrie Underwood will perform with the Armed Forces Choir and the U.S. Naval Academy Music Club. She will sing between JD Vance being sworn in as Vice President and Donald Trump being sworn in as President.
"I love our country, and I am honored to be asked to sing at the inauguration and to be a small part of this historic event. This is a time for all of us to come together and look toward the future," the singer said.
But that solidarity was nowhere to be seen on social media after it was announced that Underwood would be attending Trump's second inauguration. Her name immediately shot to the top of US search trends on X.
“Will you be performing Before he Cheats ? ” one fan asked. Many others agreed. Fans took to Underwood’s latest Instagram post, which had nothing to do with the inauguration, to express their displeasure.
Carrie Underwood will perform at President-elect Donald Trump's inauguration on January 20.
"Sad to see you're a Trump supporter," another fan commented on the post, while another wrote: "Don't ever call yourself an LGBTQ ally again, you're supporting a man who wants to erase LGBTQ rights, you should be ashamed." Dozens of others said they would unfollow the music superstar, saying the move could hurt her career.
Still, there were those who supported Carrie Underwood. One person wrote: "People here literally stared at their phones for 24 hours to be able to join the fight against hate. Carrie Underwood is amazing. This is going to be a great show."
Many have noted that this isn't the first time Underwood has ventured into politics and taken a more conservative stance. Many remember the time she liked a Twitter video protesting the wearing of masks during the Covid-19 pandemic.
In 2021, Carrie Underwood sided with her husband Mike Fisher in opposing the Covid-19 vaccine initiated by Aaron Rodger.
