ANTD.VN - The Hon Thom cable car route is expected to reopen from December 15, after the most elaborate and comprehensive periodic maintenance ever, under the supervision and implementation of a team of experts from Doppelmayr - Garaventa, the world's leading cable car company in Switzerland.
From October 2023 to the end of November 2023, right before the "golden season" of tourism on Phu Quoc Island, the Hon Thom cable car has stopped receiving visitors to conduct the largest periodic technical maintenance in recent years, to ensure bringing visitors the highest quality and safest experiences.

The world’s longest three-wire cable car at Sun World Hon Thom, invested bySun Group and manufactured and constructed by Doppelmayr – Garaventa, the world’s leading cable car company in Switzerland. Not only connecting An Thoi town to the marine entertainment complex on Hon Thom island, the cable car also “gives birth” to an unprecedentedly attractive and classy experience for visitors to Phu Quoc. This is also the cable car route that has been particularly impressed by international visitors and the world media.
This is also a project that requires relatively complex operating techniques with a high level of safety, so the Hon Thom cable car line is regularly maintained by a team of domestic and international experts. And according to the representative of Sun World Hon Thom - the unit that owns and operates this cable line, every 6 years, the international team of experts Doppelmayr - Garaventa will conduct a comprehensive major maintenance.
According to the assessment of the world's leading experts, the periodic maintenance and inspection of the cable car system plays an important role, determining the smooth operation and lifespan of the project. At the same time, periodic maintenance also allows the team of experts to propose appropriate and timely replacement plans for equipment imported from Europe, to ensure absolute safety for the cable car system.
Maintaining the nearly 8km long cable car line across the sea requires great care and investment. |
This periodic technical maintenance at Hon Thom cable line has the participation of 6 world-leading cable car experts and 20 Vietnamese engineers from the maintenance team of Sun World Hon Thom complex. All items of the project such as cable, cable support pulley, anti-vibration weights on the corresponding cable, cable car cabin... will be synchronously inspected, maintained, repaired or replaced if necessary.
Sun World Hon Thom representative said that the cable car maintenance process has been carefully planned, elaborately implemented with great expense. All specialized equipment used for the cable car line is not manufactured in Vietnam, there is no available replacement, so 18 tons of equipment and cable winches are completely imported from Austria, Switzerland and transported by plane.
A representative of Sun World Hon Thom shared: “ The largest periodic technical maintenance since the cable line came into operation required the cable car system to temporarily stop receiving visitors for more than 2 months, causing a significant decrease in revenue for Sun World Hon Thom. However, determining that the safety and satisfaction of visitors are the top priority, Sun World Hon Thom is determined to complete this task that requires both human resources and financial resources, with the biggest goal being to ensure that when welcoming visitors back, the cable car will continue to bring deep impressions to visitors about a safe, friendly and hospitable Phu Quoc destination with unique experiences .”

The process of transporting equipment to the pillars is considered a challenge for the courage and perseverance of the engineers, due to the difficulty of the sea and mountainous terrain. The Hon Thom cable car line is the longest 3-wire cable car line in the world, with a total length of nearly 7,900m, crossing the sea and 6 cable towers on the islands, of which the highest tower is up to 174m. In particular, the access road to the cable towers has a limited area, due to the high requirements for nature protection, not damaging the trees and landscape. Moreover, the wind and weather of the sea in the South of Phu Quoc Island also significantly affect the maintenance work at such a high altitude. "Therefore, the technical maintenance time for the entire cable line has been longer than expected," added a representative of Sun World Hon Thom.
The cable car route is expected to welcome visitors back in December, with the combination of Asia's most modern water park - Aquatopia, honored by World Travel Awards, and the challenging game zone Exotica, Sun World Hon Thom promises to continue to bring visitors explosive and exciting experiences, in the journey to discover Phu Quoc in the most beautiful season of the year.

Recently, the New York Times of the US expressed its impression of the world record cable car routes in Phu Quoc, Sa Pa, Ba Na..., stating that this is a testament to the spectacular transformation of the Vietnamese economy and tourism industry.
