Determined to open tunnel number 3 before April 30, 2025
According to General Director of Deo Ca Ngo Truong Nam Group, at the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway construction site, there are currently about 3,800 employees and 1,500 machines and equipment participating in simultaneous construction at 50 construction points. Up to now, the construction output has reached about 8,000 billion VND, equivalent to 60% of the total project volume. Right from the beginning of the construction, the contractor has prioritized the construction of important items to promote other items in the project. In particular, the 3 tunnel items are important critical paths that play a key role in ensuring the overall progress of the entire project. Over the construction period, the progress has always ensured the set plan.

Currently, tunnels No. 1 and No. 2 have completed the construction, the units are focusing on installing electromechanical equipment and intelligent traffic control systems (ITS). Tunnel No. 3 (over 3,200m) is being constructed at high intensity. At tunnel No. 3, there are currently more than 700 engineers and workers working in shifts 24/7. Up to now, the left tunnel branch has dug 2,750m/3,200m, the right tunnel branch has dug 3,108m/3,200m. The remaining 90m of tunnel is expected to be dug before April 30, 2025. This is an important technical milestone that plays a decisive role in the progress of the entire project. At the same time, the Deo Ca Group has also strengthened the monitoring of the construction of tunnel No. 3 to closely monitor the deformation and displacement parameters of the structures. Technical milestones are also closely reviewed and checked to ensure absolute accuracy.
Nguyen Tien Thanh, head of the command board of tunnel No. 3, said that with normal geology, the unit can dig about 6-10m per day. However, the speed of digging tunnel No. 3 is currently slowing down due to weak geology. "There are only more than 90m left to clear the tunnel, but we have to be careful because the geological zone we are facing is a level IV rock layer, with a strength of less than 25Mpa, almost soil. Therefore, we can only dig a maximum of 3m per day," said Mr. Thanh. Grasping this information, Deo Ca Group is implementing many technical solutions to organize flexible construction to control progress. Tunnel No. 3 is being constructed in strict compliance with the Deo Ca NATM method, dividing the blasting section into many small mirrors to reduce vibration and limit risks. Immediately after each blast, the concrete lining is sprayed immediately to stabilize the structure.
“This is an important time. The command board always encourages engineers and workers to stay on site and limit leave, except in cases of force majeure. The goal is to work together to be determined and make efforts to achieve the goal of clearing the tunnel on schedule,” Mr. Thanh shared.
Focus on bridge and road construction
In addition to geological difficulties, the weather in the last months of 2024 and early 2025 was also very unfavorable, many items could not be constructed due to prolonged rain. “The complex geology and unfavorable weather have greatly affected the construction progress. Specifically, the prolonged rain made it impossible to construct the roadbed as planned. Now the weather is more favorable, the contractor is speeding up the progress of the foundation and other items,” said Mr. Ngo Truong Nam.

The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Expressway Project is 88km long, with a total investment of more than VND 20.4 trillion, passing through Quang Ngai (60.3km) and Binh Dinh (27.7km). This is the largest component project out of 12 component projects under the North - South Expressway Construction Project, Eastern Region, Phase 2021 - 2025. The Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon Expressway Project is divided into 3 packages XL01, XL02 (Quang Ngai) and XL03 (Binh Dinh), with Project Management Board 2 (Ministry of Construction) as the investor and Deo Ca Group as the leading unit of the consortium of contractors. |
Currently, the volume of embankment of the main road has reached about 95%. Of which, 10km has been paved with R25 asphalt concrete layer and 2km has been paved with C19 asphalt concrete layer. Other "backbone" items of the project's road category are also in the completion stage. Regarding the item of barriers on both sides of the route to prevent livestock and pets from entering the highway, causing traffic safety problems, the contractor is also urgently implementing the construction. To date, more than 60km out of a total of about 160km of barriers have been completed.
Regarding the bridge category, all 77 bridges on the route have been completed and are in the process of completion. Of which, Song Ve Bridge has been closed and other items are being completed for technical traffic. As for the other bridges, the bored pile drilling has been basically completed. Of which, 67 bridges have completed the abutment body; 60 bridges are installing girders and bridge decks. The railway overpass at Duc Pho intersection (Km0+312) is still stuck with the site, currently there are still 12/37 piles that cannot be constructed. The contractor is coordinating with the locality and relevant agencies to quickly handle and hand over the site for construction, without affecting the overall progress of the entire project.
Talking about the determination of all engineers and workers at the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway construction site, Mr. Ngo Truong Nam emphasized that racing to meet the progress and ensure the completion of this national key traffic project, in addition to the contractor's task, is also the honor of Deo Ca Group. "In the first days of the year of At Ty 2025, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led the Government's working delegation to inspect the Quang Ngai - Hoai Nhon expressway project. The Prime Minister welcomed the working spirit of the contractors and the team of officers, engineers and workers at the construction site. The Prime Minister assigned the contractor to complete the project before December 31, 2025, shortening the progress by 7 months compared to the original plan. Therefore, Deo Ca Group is determined to complete the task assigned by the Prime Minister at all costs," Mr. Nam pledged.
