Cao Bang changes thanks to OCOP

The One Commune One Product (OCOP) program has had a strong spread, affirming the right direction of a rural economic development program, contributing to the effective and sustainable construction of new rural areas in the border province of Cao Bang.

OCOP affirms product position for producers

Before 2020, due to the limited awareness of many people, the implementation of the OCOP program in Cao Bang province encountered many difficulties. However, with the efforts of departments and localities, the OCOP program has achieved many practical results, many households have risen out of poverty and become rich on their homeland.

With a passion for farming and raising animals, Ms. Ma Thi Kim Oanh, Giang Son hamlet, Minh Tam commune, Nguyen Binh district, started to learn and raise local honey bees since 2018. Initially, she only tried raising more than 30 hives, raising and learning from long-time beekeepers. Each year, the number of hives gradually increased, and the annual honey yield also increased.

In 2021, Ms. Oanh's Doan Linh honey product achieved 3-star OCOP standards. Currently, Ms. Oanh's beekeeping facility consumes 2,000 - 3,000 liters of honey each year, but the market is still mainly sold in the province. In addition to production, Ms. Oanh's facility also cooperates with a number of beekeeping households, purchasing honey products produced according to the process required by the facility, such as the same bee breed and the same flower type.

In 2024, the facility will invest in a hydrolysis machine to separate water from honey, ensuring the water ratio in honey is below 20% (if not using the machine, the average water ratio is 24 - 25%), making the honey thicker, not fermented, more delicious to drink, helping to preserve honey longer, Ms. Oanh added.

Achieving OCOP standards helps Tan Viet A vermicelli products gain a foothold in the market and expand production scale.

Like Ma Thi Kim Oanh’s honey, many products produced by farmers in many localities of Cao Bang province have reached new heights thanks to their participation in the OCOP program. From small-scale, temporary, seasonal production, many households and cooperatives in the province have learned to produce goods according to the chain, paying attention to design and quality to meet the increasing demands of the market.

Some outstanding OCOP products of Cao Bang province with large production capacity and stable consumption include: sausage, smoked meat (Tam Hoa Cooperative); Tan Viet A vermicelli (Tan Viet A Agricultural Cooperative); Huong Bao Lac sticky rice (668 Bao Lam Enterprise)... Some products targeting export markets include: black tea, green tea (Kolia Co., Ltd.) exported to China and Australia; bamboo mats, activated bamboo mats (668 Co., Ltd.) exported to Taiwan (China).

Maintain OCOP product promotion

Up to now, the whole province has 144 OCOP products of 91 entities, including 13 4-star OCOP products, 131 3-star products, belonging to 4 main product groups, including: food, beverages, handicrafts, community tourism services, eco-tourism and tourist attractions.

In 2024, strive to have 30 new registered products recognized as OCOP with 3 stars or higher; support the completion of the profile to upgrade 1 product with potential to 5 stars. Build 4 shopping points associated with a system of stores introducing OCOP products and local specialties. Maintain and consolidate 100% of OCOP products that are evaluated and classified...

Promote OCOP products at trade fairs and exhibitions

Mr. Nong Chi Kien, Head of the Department of Rural Development of Cao Bang province, said: Since implementing the OCOP program, localities in the province have seen the advantages and opportunities to exploit the value of OCOP products, thereby contributing to transforming production towards increasing scale associated with the value chain.

In the coming time, Cao Bang province will focus on promoting trade promotion activities, connecting supply and demand for OCOP products through organizing and integrating OCOP booths in the province's programs and events. Participate in fairs, exhibitions, promote and introduce OCOP products in provinces, cities and internationally. Support entities in applying information technology and e-commerce in introducing, promoting and consuming products on electronic trading floors...
