The shooting occurred in St Pauli - a central district of Hamburg, near where 40,000 Dutch fans were marching ahead of the Poland-Netherlands match in Group D of Euro 2024, which took place a few hours later.

Hamburg police said the man emerged from a pub with an axe in his hand and raised it toward nearby officers in a “threatening manner”.
“There is no connection to football to the best of our knowledge,” a police spokesman told DPA news agency. Security forces said the man was also carrying an incendiary device, possibly a petrol bomb.
Police used pepper spray against the attacker before using firearms, media reports said. One officer fired a warning shot before more shots were fired and the man fell to the ground.
The man is being treated for his injuries in hospital, Hamburg police wrote on social network X. Security has been tightened ahead of the Poland-Netherlands match in Group D at Euro 2024, with hundreds of Hamburg and federal police officers deployed at the Volksparkstadion.
On Friday, police in eastern Germany shot dead a man who went on a rampage, stabbing one person to death before hosting a house party for the opening match of Euro 2024 between Germany and Scotland. There he stabbed three others, seriously injuring two. The motive for the attack remains unclear.
