Vietnam and China Coast Guards promote cooperation in law enforcement at sea

On the afternoon of August 15, in Hanoi, Major General Le Quang Dao, Commander of the Vietnam Coast Guard, received Colonel Khuong Ba, Chinese Defense Attaché in Vietnam.

At the reception, Major General Le Quang Dao affirmed that in recent years, cooperation activities between the Vietnam Coast Guard and the China Coast Guard have been continuously promoted, expanded, and innovated in both organizational form and implementation content.

2024 is the year marking the deep and comprehensive cooperation in the field of maritime law enforcement between the Coast Guards of the two countries. In the spirit of the Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2016, the two sides have built an annual cooperation mechanism including: Vietnam-China Coast Guard Working Conference; joint patrols in the waters adjacent to the demarcation line of the Gulf of Tonkin (2 trips per year); exchanges of young officers; sending ships to visit each other.

In particular, at the 7th Vietnam Coast Guard - China Coast Guard Working Conference, the two sides agreed to strengthen new cooperation contents, notably joint patrols to combat crimes and violations at sea, once a quarter, and establish a mechanism to organize the annual Party and political work exchange program, alternating between the two countries.

Regarding upcoming cooperation activities between the Vietnam Coast Guard and the China Coast Guard, Major General Le Quang Dao said: The two sides are actively preparing for the first exchange program of Party work and political work between the Vietnam Coast Guard and the China Coast Guard. The program is scheduled to take place at the end of this month. In addition, in December this year, the two forces will continue to conduct a joint patrol in the waters adjacent to the demarcation line of the Gulf of Tonkin.

Also in December, the Vietnam Coast Guard will organize the second exchange program “Vietnam Coast Guard and Friends” in Hanoi. Major General Le Quang Dao expressed his hope that Major General Uat Trung, Director of the Chinese Coast Guard, will come to Vietnam to attend this program and co-chair the 8th Vietnam-China Coast Guard Working Conference in Hanoi.

For his part, Colonel Khuong Ba affirmed that the relationship has been demonstrated through practical and effective cooperation in many fields. In addition to the existing cooperation, Colonel Khuong Ba said that the Vietnam Coast Guard and the Chinese Coast Guard can increase joint training and exercises in the coming time.

As the Chinese Defense Attaché in Vietnam, Colonel Khuong Ba affirmed that he will try and make efforts to promote the Vietnam-China relationship in general and the cooperation between the Coast Guard forces of the two countries in particular to develop more and more strongly.
