The Information Security Department of the Ministry of Information and Communications has just identified a new online scam involving impersonating military personnel to defraud people of their money.
According to the Information Security Department, during the period before, during, and after the Lunar New Year of 2024, in many areas across the country, there were instances of impersonation of military personnel to defraud people of their money. The perpetrators wore military uniforms during video calls, causing victims to trust them and lower their guard. Some individuals called or sent messages to citizens, claiming to be the "commanders or managers" of their children serving in the military, informing them about disciplinary violations and requesting money to compensate for damages caused by their children.
The Cybersecurity Department advises people to be vigilant and wary of this scam; do not provide personal information, VNeID account passwords, OTP codes, citizen identification information, or bank account details to anyone; and do not follow instructions or requests from individuals calling from unknown phone numbers. Furthermore, if you detect any signs of fraud, please report it immediately to the nearest police station for assistance.
