Warning of the risk of failing the 12th grade graduation exam

Nearly 52% of Math test scores below average

At the conference on admissions and high school graduation exams for the 2025-2026 school year, Mr. Ha Xuan Nham, Head of SecondaryEducation Department, Hanoi Department of Education and Training, announced the score distribution of the results of the city-wide 12th grade quality assessment test for the 2024-2025 school year. The exam was held on March 21-23 with over 98% of 12th grade students taking the exam (more than 118,000 candidates).

The average scores of subjects range from 5.0 to 7.0. Of which, the highest average score is 7.08 for Economic and Legal Education, and the lowest is 5.1 for Mathematics. The whole city is divided into 16 exam clusters, Dong Da High School cluster has results higher than the city's average in 14/14 subjects; 7/14 subjects have the highest average scores in the city. High school clusters with the lowest average test scores are: Dong Anh, Son Tay - Ba Vi; Dan Phuong - Phuc Tho; Ung Hoa - My Duc.

The number of exams with a perfect score of 10/10 is very small, accounting for less than 0.1% (389 exams). The number of exams with a score of 8 or higher accounts for nearly 8%. The number of exams with a score of 4 to below 8 accounts for a large proportion, nearly 86%. The percentage of exams with a score below average (below 5) accounts for nearly 32%. Of which, the group of candidates with a high risk of failing the 12th grade graduation exam is quite high, such as the number of exams with a score below 3 accounts for nearly 7%, and the failing score (0-1) accounts for nearly 1% (about more than 4,220 candidates). Math is the subject with the highest below average score at nearly 52%. The percentage of below average scores in Literature is over 34%.

Analysis of the exam questions shows that the exam format ensures the correct structure and format of the high school graduation exam from 2025 of the Ministry of Education and Training, in which, it closely follows the Ministry's reference exam questions. The exam content is accurate, scientific, closely follows the orientation of teaching and learning to develop capacity; enhances practicality, requires students to apply knowledge to solve problems; is highly appreciated by schools, teachers, students and public opinion; has good reference value.

Overall, the results of the city-wide quality survey this year are lower than last year. The reason is said to be the change in the 2018 general education program compared to the 2006 general education program in the structure of the exam, exam content, exam format, etc.

Within expectations

Discussing the results of the recent survey, Mr. NMH, a Math teacher at a high school in Hanoi, affirmed that it was not surprising, especially in Math, where more than 50% of the test scores were 5 points or lower. The test format has changed to include multiple choice questions; true/false questions; short answer questions. In the true/false question section, candidates can easily lose points, only really good students can get good points, good/average candidates can easily get confused. The multiple choice question section has also had a certain differentiation. Mr. H predicted that this year's graduation exam scores will not be as good as last year's.

32% of test takers scored below average, Hanoi warns of risk of failing 12th grade graduation this year. Last year, the whole city had 205 candidates fail graduation from vocational education and continuing education centers.

Mr. Ha Xuan Nham said that, from the survey results, the school needs to focus on reviewing and classifying the students' level to have a plan to organize review and training for students to take the graduation exam effectively; in which, paying attention to the "coverage" of review knowledge in subjects according to instructions, according to topics that have been professionally trained by the Hanoi Department of Education and Training. Review work needs to focus on guiding students on how to solve true/false questions, in which, teachers need to build questions with increasing difficulty levels. Building a system of review questions that closely follows the requirements of the 2018 General Education Program, it is necessary to focus on training students on questions that have practical and interdisciplinary significance; using learned knowledge to solve practical problems.

Regarding the multiple-choice test with a new question format, Mr. Nguyen Trung Sy, a Math teacher at Le Hong Phong High School for the Gifted, Nam Dinh, analyzed that Part I of the 2025 high school graduation exam according to the matrix announced by the Ministry of Education and Training includes 12 multiple-choice questions with multiple answers, students only need to study and grasp the basic knowledge in the textbook. Part II is a true/false multiple-choice test with 4 questions with 4 ideas/question, students should focus on 4 topics: functions, applications of integration, conditional probability and coordinate methods in space. In this part, the questions in each question are built in order of increasing difficulty and the questions are interdependent.

Part III is a multiple choice short answer test with 6 questions. Mr. Sy reminded candidates to focus on issues such as applications of derivatives, integrals, conditional probability, linear programming problems, optimization problems, problems using coordinate methods in textbooks to solve practical problems. To do well in the problems in Part III, Mr. Sy said that candidates need to practice problem solving skills using mathematical modeling. Candidates should read more topics from specialized books for grades 11 and 12.
