To prevent rabies, Dr. Than Manh Hung, Deputy Head of the Emergency Department, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases, recommends: "When people are bitten by a dog, the first thing to do is to go immediately to the nearest medical facility for doctors to advise and get vaccinated."

"If you are unfortunately bitten by a dog at home, you should lock the dog up and monitor it, because if you let the dog run around, it can get out of control. In case you are bitten by a dog on the street, you should take the initiative to get vaccinated immediately," Dr. Hung noted.

In addition, according to Dr. Hung, the hot summer is the time when infectious diseases can break out, especially rabies. Therefore, people should not be subjective, households with dogs should have their dogs fully vaccinated. If dogs are allowed to go outside, they should be muzzled to prevent disease in the community.

5 BASIC THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT RAVIGO

According to the Department of Preventive Medicine (Ministry of Health), rabies is caused by the rabies virus (Rhabdovirus), transmitted from animals to humans. There are two forms of rabies: furious and paralytic, of which furious is the most common.

How to prevent rabies:

Do not let dogs and cats roam free.

Dogs must be muzzled and leashed when walking on the street.

Stay away from strange cats and dogs, and stray cats and dogs.

Pet dogs must be vaccinated against rabies annually.

5 ways to help prevent dog bites:

1. Do not run fast near dogs.

2. Do not tease the dog, do not approach the dog when it is eating, sleeping or when the mother dog is nursing.

3. Do not stare into the dog's eyes.

4. When a dog growls at you, don't run away. Stand still with your arms at your sides. Let the dog sniff you and it will go away.

5. If attacked by a dog, try to sit still, curl up and cover your face with your hands.

Treatment of dog and cat bite wounds:

u Immediately after being bitten by a dog or cat, the wound should be washed with soap and under running water continuously for 10 - 15 minutes. If soap is not available, the wound can be immediately washed with clean water under running water continuously for 15 minutes. Then disinfect with 70% alcohol (70 degrees) or iodine alcohol.

Do not squeeze or squeeze the wound to make it bleed or further damage the wound.

Never cover the wound.

Go to a medical facility for rabies vaccination as directed/prescribed by medical staff.

The incubation period can last from a few days to several months; the time from onset of illness to death ranges from 1 to 7 days.

Rabies caused by classical rabies virus is almost 100% fatal in humans, and there is currently no specific treatment for rabies.

Post-exposure rabies prophylaxis (PEP) is required if you are bitten by a dog, cat, or other animal that is rabid or suspected to be rabid.

PEP should be applied if: the bite causes skin abrasions and bleeding; if the mucous membranes in the skin area come into contact with the saliva of a suspected rabid animal; if the animal that bit the person dies, disappears during the monitoring period, shows abnormal or erratic behavior; if the test results of the animal's brain material are positive for rabies virus.
