Leaders of nine European Union (EU) Mediterranean countries, known as MED9, on October 11 called for an immediate ceasefire in the Middle East and urged the resumption of diplomatic efforts to resolve ongoing conflicts in the region.
In a statement concluding the 11th MED9 Summit in Paphos, Cyprus, leaders stressed that “the ongoing situation in the Middle East is extremely alarming,” requiring “an immediate ceasefire” and the rapid provision of humanitarian aid to Lebanon.
MED9 calls on all parties to exercise restraint and engage in mediation efforts to defuse tensions. The group also reaffirms its support for all UN resolutions related to the Middle East and pledges to work together to influence broader EU policies on regional issues.
The statement added that in the context of the escalating situation in the Middle East, the Russia-Ukraine conflict and persistent political, economic and social pressures, the MED9 regional cooperation format has shown its effectiveness in shaping European responses to common challenges.
The MED9 chair, Cyprus, hosted the summit attended by heads of state and government from France, Greece, Italy, Croatia, Malta, Slovenia and Spain, while Portugal sent its foreign minister. European Commission (EC) President Ursula von der Leyen also attended the event.
On the sidelines of the MED9 Summit, Jordan's King Abdullah II held a series of high-level meetings with European leaders to discuss efforts to help ease tensions in the Middle East.
Mr. Abdullah met with Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides, French President Emmanuel Macron, Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Slovenian Prime Minister Robert Golob and Maltese Prime Minister Robert Abela.
According to the Jordan News Agency (JNA), the discussions focused on the escalating violence in the Gaza Strip and Lebanon, with the King of Jordan urging increased efforts to achieve a comprehensive ceasefire and end the conflict. He also stressed the need to facilitate the rapid and unhindered delivery of humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip.
King Abdullah also expressed concern about the growing violence by extremist settlers in the West Bank and the desecration of religious sites in Jerusalem, warning that the region would remain engulfed in violence unless a viable political solution based on a two-state framework was adopted.
In addition to the regional situation, the meetings also addressed strengthening and expanding cooperation between Jordan and the EU. Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah, Jordan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi and other key officials also attended King Abdullah's discussions with senior leaders of European countries.
