Thuan An fishing port (Thuan An ward, Hue city) is considered the oldest and largest port serving the fishing industry in Thua Thien Hue province. After more than a decade of operation and exploitation, this fishing port has gradually deteriorated, and the anchorage of ships is overloaded.
To promote operational efficiency, exploitation and meet the needs of fishermen, in October 2020, the People's Committee of Thua Thien Hue province assigned the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of the province to be the investor and implement the project to build Thuan An fishing port combined with a storm shelter anchorage area.
The project is invested with a total cost of 220 billion VND from compensation capital of Formosa Ha Tinh Steel Corporation.
This is a component of the overall project "Construction and upgrading of Thua Thien Hue fisheries infrastructure", including: Thuan An fishing port combined with storm shelter; upgrading Phu Hai storm shelter (Phu Hai commune, Phu Vang district); Tu Hien fishing port combined with storm shelter (Vinh Hien commune, Phu Loc district).
It is expected that after completion, Thuan An port will ensure the scale for ships to dock and depart with a minimum capacity of 20,000 tons/year, ensuring technical criteria according to EU regulations. The port will meet the anchoring and storm shelter needs of 500 ships of all types with a length of 6m or more.
Speaking with VietNamNet , a leader of the Management Board of Agricultural and Rural Development Construction Investment Projects of Thua Thien Hue province (the investor's representative unit) said that the construction process, due to various reasons, led to the project being behind schedule, forcing Thua Thien Hue province to request extensions many times.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Son, Deputy Director of Thua Thien Hue Fishing Port Management Board, one of the reasons why the port opening announcement procedure has not been accepted is because there has not been a decision on land and water surface allocation for the Thuan An fishing port project.
In particular, although the handover has been completed and the management unit has received and moved into operation at the operating building, the Thuan An fishing port cannot operate yet due to the lack of a depth map. These reasons have caused the fishing port worth more than 200 billion VND to not complete the registration procedure for the port opening announcement.
“When discovering this shortcoming, the investor contracted a specialized unit to measure and determine the current status and area of the port land and water surface. Currently, the application for land and water surface allocation for Thuan An fishing port has been sent to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and relevant agencies for appraisal and processing. After completing this procedure, it will be submitted to the competent authority for consideration and announcement of the port opening,” said the investor representative.
