On September 12, the Provincial People's Committee announced the conclusion of handing over the Tra Bong River fishing wharf to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for exploitation. This fishing wharf costing nearly 185 billion VND was built 14 years ago and has not received any "fish" in 12 years of use.
Great expectations but more than 12 years of disappointment
The Tra Bong River fishing port project, invested by the Management Board of Dung Quat Economic Zone and Quang Ngai Province Industrial Parks, was approved in September 2008 and adjusted and supplemented in July 2009. The project started in 2010, completed and put into use in 2013 with a total investment of nearly 185 billion VND.
When investing, Tra Bong River fishing wharf is expected to serve the fishing industry for resettled households and people in the project area; ensure stable and long-term fishing activities; anchor to avoid storms...
With the above objectives, the project includes items such as: resettlement area; 128m long wharf, 90m long wharf; 1.4km long embankment; leveling the ground with an area of nearly 18,000m2 ; dredging the loading and unloading area in front of the wharf and turning around to ensure that 15m long ships can dock; technical infrastructure works serving the fishing port...
Contrary to the goal, after 12 years of use, the wharf has not achieved anything and has many shortcomings, such as: no port water area; no guaranteed port land area; no guaranteed channel depth and water area in front of the wharf for fishing boats 15m or longer to enter and exit; no office building; no fire prevention and fighting system...
From hope to disappointment, many fishermen in the area who practice offshore squid fishing with large boats and engines continuously petitioned voters during meetings and sent documents to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development when their rights were affected, especially the policy of supporting oil for fishing boats according to Decree 48 and tracing the origin of aquatic products.
For many years, to enjoy the policy, fishermen have gone to Tinh Ky port or Tinh Hoa port (Quang Ngai city) to trace the origin of seafood.

Direct exploitation but the provincial fishing port management board is also "helpless"
Currently, only a few small boats are anchored, the wharf is degraded. In a recent meeting, Mr. Tran Phuoc Hien, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Quang Ngai province, assigned the Tra Bong river fishing wharf to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and directly to the provincial fishing port management board for operation and exploitation.
Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , the leader of the provincial fishing port management board said that the provincial People's Committee assigned the task but did not know how to exploit it. Because in reality, there is only a wharf, the rest does not have water surface area, warehouse, fish sorting house...
“In order to operate, we must first dredge and break the reefs to clear the channel for ships to dock at the port. Next, a series of items need to be invested in to meet the criteria for a type 3 port as stipulated in the 2017 Fisheries Law,” said the board leader.
According to this person, after review, more than 100 billion VND is needed to invest in completing the wharf.

In the concluding announcement, the Provincial People's Committee also requested the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development to act as the investor and propose the Provincial People's Committee to consider investing and completing construction items to meet the criteria of a type 3 port; study the plan to turn Tra Bong River fishing port into a satellite port of Sa Can fishing port to serve fishermen in the short and long term.
