WeChat and Kaspersky will be removed from Government of Canada devices immediately and users will be blocked from downloading the apps in the future. The government does not interfere with the download or use of the two software on citizens' mobile devices, but recommends that anyone who uses them consult the Communications Security Authority's online guide to assess the risks.

Canadian officials said that while no breaches have been detected, the data collection methods of these apps "provide significant access to content on mobile devices."
“The decision to remove and block WeChat and Kaspersky was made to ensure that Government of Canada networks and data remain secure and protected, consistent with the approach of our international partners,” the statement said.
For its part, Kaspersky expressed surprise and disappointment with the Canadian government's decision. They were not warned or given any opportunity to address the Canadian government's concerns.
In February, Canada banned TikTok, a short-video app owned by ByteDance, from public devices for similar reasons. In an email to employees explaining the ban, Canadian government officials said the decision was made after they determined that TikTok’s data collection methods could lead to cyberattacks.
