To prevent high tides from affecting people's lives, Ninh Kieu district, Can Tho city has just started building walls and sandbags along a 1km stretch.
Mr. Phan Thanh Dien - Head of the Urban Management Department of Ninh Kieu District - said today (November 1) that after 5 days of construction, the tidal barrier project in Ninh Kieu Park area was completed with a cost of nearly 100 million VND.
Accordingly, the section from Can Tho marina to Uncle Ho statue (about 200m) will be built with a water retaining wall of 0.5m, increasing the total height to 0.8m. The section from the passenger wharf to guest house No. 2 (about 600m) will be covered with sandbags with a height of 0.6-0.7m depending on the location.
According to Mr. Dien, the embankment in the above area has been raised to 2.5m, higher than the historical high tide peak in 2022 (2.27m). In the long term, the district has submitted a proposal to the city for the renovation of this embankment section to synchronize with the sewer and boat lock system.
Previously, during the high tide in mid-October, many roads in the Ninh Kieu wharf area were deeply flooded, affecting people's lives and businesses.
Many people are concerned that this area is still deeply flooded despite being protected by a "shield" system such as the Can Tho River embankment, boat locks, culverts... from the Can Tho City Development Project and the Enhancement of Urban Resilience, with a total investment of nearly VND9,200 billion.
Explaining this, Mr. Nguyen Van Tho - Deputy Director of the ODA Project Management Board of Can Tho City (investor) - said that when the tide is high, water from the Hau River and Can Tho River overflows into the canals, ditches and drainage system of the city and then overflows onto the road surface.
In addition, many sewers do not have one-way valves, so they cannot prevent water from flowing back from the river.
