The delegation also asked the city leaders to share the city's response measures related to addressing the consequences of climate change, as well as share some models that are being successfully implemented locally.
Informing the working delegation, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He - Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee - said that Can Tho City is the core area of the Mekong Delta, blessed with fertile land, temperate climate, and abundant sources of rice, fruits, and seafood. The city also has a favorable geographical location, about 80km from the East Sea, so the conditions for fresh water resources are also relatively more favorable than some other provinces in the region... However, facing the increasingly obvious impact of climate change, the impact of natural disasters, and man-made disasters, the city is always vigilant and not subjective in responding to challenges such as: riverbank landslides, urban flooding, tornadoes; drought, water shortage, saltwater intrusion...
Can Tho city leaders and delegation members exchanged on the sidelines of the reception. |
According to Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He, in the face of the complex developments of climate change, Can Tho city has proposed a number of key solutions such as: Raising public awareness; implementing engineering and non-engineering solutions; investing in irrigation infrastructure, waterways, and road transport. In addition, to solve the problem of urban flooding, the city has also implemented engineering solutions to protect the core area to pump water, regulate water, and operate the flood prevention system effectively. For rural areas, the city also has a long-term strategic plan to transform seasonal production and shift the structure of crops and livestock to suit the characteristics of weather and climate.
Mr. Nguyen Ngoc He also said that not only Can Tho but also many other localities in the region have also recommended to the Government that there should be international cooperation towards protecting water resources, preventing saltwater intrusion to effectively respond and adapt to climate change. The city's leaders also acknowledged that, in the face of the complex and unpredictable developments of climate change, Can Tho city still lacks practical experience. Therefore, the city wishes to share experiences and receive support and cooperation from countries in the G4 group in issues of raising public awareness of climate change, solutions to respond to climate change, issues of adapting to nature, people's livelihoods; issues of reducing methane emissions, reducing plastic waste, storing water, limiting riverbank erosion, etc.

"The information collected by the Delegation will help the Governments of other countries in formulating policies and cooperation programs with Vietnam in the coming time," Ms. Leigh McCumber added.
