Need to break the cycle

INSUITABLE COMPETITION SYSTEM

In countries with developed football, the national competition system follows the "triangle model", that is, the top is pointed and the bottom is large. To put it simply, the lower leagues will have many participating teams and the number will decrease in the upper leagues, until the national championship (VĐQG) has the least. European football is unquestionable, as this model has been applied for a long time. In Asia, the Japanese National Championship (J-League 1) has 20 competing teams, and the first division (J-League 2) also has the same number. Korea has the strongest football in the continent and has participated in the World Cup many times, but only 12 teams play in the National Championship (K-League 1), while the first division (K-League 2) has 13 participating teams.

Not to mention, right in Southeast Asia, Thai and Indonesian football also follow the above principle. In the land of golden pagodas, the National Championship (Thai League 1) has 16 teams, while the First Division (Thai League 2) has 18 teams. In the archipelago country, the National Championship (Liga 1) has 18 clubs and the First Division is even more "huge" with 28 competing teams.

Meanwhile, the Vietnamese football competition system has a "strange" model, with the top and bottom being large, while the belly is squeezed. The V-League and the second division both have 14 teams, but the first division only has 11 clubs participating. Football expert Doan Minh Xuong expressed his opinion: "In principle and FIFA also recommends, the lower divisions are the foundation, everyone has done so, except Vietnamese football. After 20 years of professionalism, the current situation of the Vietnamese football competition system is still not suitable, causing resources to be fragmented."

FOR YOUNG PLAYERS, IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE

According to Mr. Doan Minh Xuong, the first division is in a state of both shortage and weakness. It is said to be shortage because there are few teams, and weakness because many clubs only participate to maintain the movement, without the ambition to be promoted. "It is time for Vietnamese football to adjust the competition system, specifically reducing the number of teams in the National Championship and increasing the number of teams in the first division. The lower division will play a fundamental role, like the foundation of a house. If the foundation is wide and strong, the house will be strong. The top of the professional football system must be where the elite gather," said expert Doan Minh Xuong.

The first division needs more teams to participate.

When the lower divisions, especially the first division, are expanded, this will be a suitable playground for young players to have the opportunity to develop. The more first division teams there are, the more young players there will be. The possibility of "rising stars" appearing will of course be higher. Through the screening process, young players with enough talent will be a valuable source for the V-League and of course for the national team.

Mr. Xuong assessed: "In the first division teams (or lower divisions), young players get to play a lot. In the V-League, teams are afraid of relegation, so how dare they use young players? Football is a competitive, combat sport, but without much competition, without a playground, players cannot improve their skills. Without a talented young player force, of course the national teams will be affected in terms of both professional strength and personnel. Here I am referring to both the national youth teams (U.19, U.21, U.23), and the Vietnam national team. I assume that if the first division has 16 teams, players will get to play more than 30 matches/year (including the National Cup). That way, young players will have the opportunity to rub shoulders and improve their skills."

TIGHTEN CLUB STANDARDS

In addition to improving the national competition system, tightening regulations on club standards is also an inseparable task (in all tournaments). If we want to have a good and highly professional tournament, each element (the teams) must be of high quality. In this regard, Vietnamese football people are not yet determined. Even a traditional team like Hai Phong Club has been constantly reminded by the Asian Football Confederation about building a youth team. The port city team has had to repeatedly request for an exception to participate in the National Championship and continental tournaments.

Expert Doan Minh Xuong emphasized: "We need to be strict about team standards. Clubs must ensure finances, facilities, youth training systems, etc. If we can fully understand this, the tournament will be more competitive, because every team that participates is serious. V-League teams will be really strong. Meanwhile, second and first division teams, if they feel they are not strong enough, will focus on training young players to transfer to the upper ranks, then take the money and repeat that. If many clubs can do that, Vietnamese football will produce a lot of talent and have the opportunity to continuously progress."

However, to achieve the above, there needs to be a clear roadmap and gradual transformation. According to Mr. Xuong, in order for provincial football teams to develop and become more systematic, it is necessary to mobilize social resources. Localities and businesses need to join hands in a spirit of goodwill. (continued)

IMPROVING QUALITY IS ALSO FIGHTING NEGATIVITY

A non-competitive tournament means a high risk of corruption. According to expert Doan Minh Xuong, in the first and second divisions, teams have no ambition to be promoted, play mediocrely and lack motivation, so betting is likely to occur, or two teams collude to fix results... In fact, corruption has occurred in the first division, with up to 5 players of the Ba Ria-Vung Tau team being prosecuted for participating in football betting. Recently, the VFF issued a warning and reminder to the second division team Tay Nguyen Gia Lai for having an unusual playing attitude and conceding "suspicious" goals.
